Loneliness, isolation,
and technology

It is currently discussed if new technologies have been used properly and thereby contributing to the development of modern society. Obviously nobody disagrees with its relevance as important tools in our lives.

The digital television, mobile devices with their multiple and interesting features, videos and movies with high definition, increasingly fast and powerful personal computers, tablets, worldwide interconnection provided by internet, the advent of so-called social networks, virtual games, fancy appliances, through image, facilitates medical diagnosis - here's a brief list of what the latest technology has offered us, expanding our horizons in macro and microcosm.

It is imperative, however, that the human creature, dazzled by external achievements, do not forget the sublime achievements of its inner world.

The benefits that technological advancement offers us should serve to make life easier, and never to complicate it, since the irresponsible use of technological resources at our disposal can bring us great distress.

No one, surely aware, that such tools can serve good or evil, as trends and free will of those who use them.

The same global computer network that conveys an educational lecture can be used to promote vulgarity, lowliness, villainy. In some unfortunate episodes attributed to terrorism was found that the agents that caused it, had collected information for that action on the same computer network that allows this magazine to reach the homes of thousands of people here and abroad.

Another fact, already mentioned by some writers of this magazine, it relates to the isolation of the people, even when they live in a social environment full of people. In one corner, the girl with her eyes fixed on her tablet, in the other, the young obsessed with video games; further, a woman concentrated in the notes of Facebook or in her newest smartphone...

In a text published in this journal some time ago, the confrere José Lucas, from Portugal, referred to the subject. "Paradoxically - he said - in these times that should be of joy, facing the increase in technology, society suffers a serious deadly disease, loneliness, even when surrounded by a multitude of people."

And to end his article, he wrote: "It was then I realized the serious illness, that it silently gets install that affects us today: SIT (Loneliness, Isolation and Technology). If the new technologies are a boon to mankind, their use should be done sparingly, so that the guiding direction of socialization pointed out in The Spirits' Book (...) will not be jeopardized by this scourge that combines technology to isolation and loneliness of the human being.
