Caring for the garden

One day, Manuela saw her mother working in the garden and was delighted! She thought it was easy!... At that moment she decided that she would also start a garden so that her mother could admire her work.

So, she waited for a time when her mother was leaving to do various things away from home and while saying goodbye to her, asked:

- Mom, are you going to take long to come back?

The mother, noting her concern, hugged her in farewell and asked:

- Are you worried, honey? Stay calm! I have several things to do, but I'll be back as fast as I can.

- All right, Mom! I'll be waiting for you!

She kissed her daughter again, waved goodbye and left the house.

Manuela waited for her mother to turn the corner and ran into the yard. There, she took a shovel, with which her mother dug the soil, and went to her mother's garden, removing the beautiful plants that were there.

Then she looked for a good place to plant the seedlings she had plucked from her mother’s garden. She wanted to do everything quickly so her mother could see it when she got back and be proud of her.

Picking a spot further down the backyard, she dug a lot of holes and put in each of them a flower bud she had taken from her mother’s garden.

When her mother arrived home, Manuela was happy with her activity, and she could not wait to show her mother the garden she had planted.

After lunch, her mother gathered the dishes from the table, placed them in the kitchen sink, and, taking a brush got ready to do the dishes, but in a hurry to show her mother what she had done, Manuela said:

- Mom! I have a surprise for you! Come with me to the backyard!

- Darling, now I have to do the dishes. I'll come later, okay?

- No, Mom! I want you to see what I did earlier today! ...

The mother, a little worried because she knew that Manuela could be a bit naughty thought it would be best to accompany the girl.

So she washed her hands, wiped them dry, and then accompanied her daughter into the yard.

Holding her mother's hand, the little girl took her to the place where she had planted many kinds of flowers. Then, satisfied with her work, she said:

- Look, Mom! I planted them!  It's a garden like yours! Do you like it? Isn’t it beautiful?

The mother saw soil scattered around, plants that had been put in the ground in an awkward way, and looking at Manuela’s joy, asked:

- Did you do it by yourself, sweetheart?

- Yes, Mom! I took your garden plants from the front and brought them to my garden! Do you like it? It is beautiful, isn’t it?

The mother took a deep breath, saddened to see the condition of the plants her daughter had planted and replied:

- They look beautiful, Manuela. But why didn’t you ask for my help? I would have helped you build your garden!

- Mom, didn’t you like it?

- I like it, honey. But come, sit here with me in the shade of this tree. You know what, Manuela, when we want to do something, we must first learn it.

- Ah! You mean I did everything wrong? -  and the little girl cried sadly.

- All of us, in the face of something new, must learn. I learned to take care of flowers with my mother, your grandmother Benedita! Because, if I were to start a garden alone, I would do everything wrong.

- What now, Mom? I ruined your plants!

The mother hugged her daughter affectionately, reassuring her:

- No, Manuela, you did not ruin anything. But how about learning to deal with plants? Let's schedule a time after school and I'll teach you how to do it. OK?

Manuela hugged her mother, full of joy. Then the mother began to help her learn how to plant flowers. From the care of the little plants to the importance of soaking the soil so that the little seed can feel its best when it is placed in the ground to grow and turn into a beautiful plant.

Thus, Manuela learned the lessons that her mother passed on to her, helping her plants grow beautiful and full of life! She learned that there are species that like the sun, others that like shade; Some prefer more water, some less.

Afterwards, Manuela helped her mother redo her garden, which was completely ruined, because of the damage the little girl had done carelessly.

When they finished the job, Manuela gave her mother a big smile, and suggested:

- Mom, now that I know how to take care of flowers, can I take care of both gardens? After all, I was the one who ruined it, right?

The mother hugged little Manuela and smiled.

- Yes, darling! Now you've learned how to take care of plants! So, we'll both take care of the "our" gardens!
