Genesis

Allan Kardec

(Part 44)

Continuing with our methodical study of Genesis - Miracles and predictions according to Spiritism by Allan Kardec which had its first edition published on January 6, 1868. The answers to the questions suggested for discussion are at the end of the text below.

Questions

A. Do Spirits need the element called ethereal fluid?

B. How do Spirits operate on fluids?

C. How do Spirits create the objects that they use?

Reading Text

859. Dreams - The Gospel says that Joseph was warned by an angel, who appeared to him in a dream, and advised him to flee to Egypt with the Child. Warnings through dreams play a big role in the sacred books of all religions. Without guaranteeing the accuracy of all the facts narrated and without discussing the phenomenon itself, it is nothing abnormal, knowing as we know, that the Spirit frees himself of the material ties during sleep, and enters momentarily in the spiritual life, where he meets other Spirits that he knows.

860. Frequently, this is the moment when the Guiding Spirits advice the ones they protect. There are numerous cases of warnings in a dream, but one should not infer that all dreams are warnings, or even less, that what you see in a dream has a special meaning.

861. Star of the Magi - A star is said to have appeared to the wise men, who went to worship Jesus. The star moved before them showing the way and stopped when they arrived. We do not know if the story that Matthew tells us is real, or if it is just a figure symbolizing that the wise men were guided in a mysterious way to the place where the Child was, as there is no means to check this. What matters is if such a fact is possible.

862. We know that, in that precise circumstance, the light could not be a star. By the time the incident occurred, one could think it was, because it was believed that stars were bright spots nailed onto the sky and likely to fall on the Earth. However, not today, when we know the true nature of the stars. Although its cause was not the one then attributed to it, it does not mean that it is not possible that a light, similar to a star appeared. A Spirit can appear as a luminous form. The Spirit can also change part of his perispiritic fluid into a source of light. Many facts of this kind, modern and perfectly authentic, do not come from another cause, which has nothing supernatural.

863. Dual view - When Jesus entered Jerusalem, He approached the city and came to Bethphage, near the Mount of Olives. Jesus then sent two of His disciples, saying to them: - Go to this village that lies ahead and, arriving there, you will find a donkey tied, and with it its colt. Untie them and bring them to me. If someone tells you anything, answer that the Lord needs them and they will at once let you take them. The disciples then went and did as Jesus ordered them.

864. Kiss of Judas - "Arise, let us go, the one who will betray me is already approaching". He had not finished saying these words and Judas, one of the twelve, arrived and with him a troop armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and elders of the people. The one who had betrayed Him had given them a sign so that they could recognize Him, saying, the one I kiss is the one you are seeking. Take Him. Therefore, he approached Jesus and said, Master, I salute you, and kissed him. At the same time, the others, coming forward, rushed to Jesus and grabbed him.

865. Miraculous Fishing - One day, as Jesus was on the shore of Lake Gennesaret, as the crowd pressed Him to listen to the word of God, He saw two boats moored at the edge of the lake in which fishermen had come and were washing their nets. He entered one of those boats, which was Simon's, and asked him to pull out a little from the shore, and, having sat, taught the people from inside the boat. When He finished speaking, He said to Simon: Go to the sea and cast your nets to fish. Simon answered: Master, we worked all night and caught nothing. However, since You command, I will let down the net. Having done this, they caught such a large amount of fish that the net tore. They waved to the members, who were in the other boat, to come and help them. They came and filled their boats, and it was so much fish that they almost sank.

866. Calling of Peter, Andrew, James, John and Matthew - Walking along the Sea of Galilee, Jesus saw two brothers, Simon, called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting their nets into the sea, for they were fishermen. Jesus said unto them, "Follow me and I will make you fishermen of men". Soon they left their nets and followed Him. Hence, continuing, he saw two other brothers, James, the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who were in a boat with Zebedee their father, and they were repairing their nets, and Jesus called them. They immediately left their nets and their father and followed Him. Leaving that place, as Jesus was walking, He saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the tax bench, and He said, "Follow me", and the man immediately got up and followed Him.

867. These facts do not surprise if we know the power of the second sight and the very natural cause of this gift. Jesus possessed it in a high degree, and it can be said that this was His normal state, as demonstrated by many acts of his life, which, today, can be explained by the magnetic phenomena and Spiritism.

868. The fishing considered miraculous is also explained by the second sight. Jesus did not spontaneously produce fish where there was none. He saw with His second sight where they could be found and safely told the fishermen to cast their nets in that specific place.

869. The accuracy of thought and, therefore, certain predictions are originated from the spiritual view. When Jesus calls Peter, Andrew, James, John and Matthew, it is because He knew their intimate provisions and knew they would follow Him and were able to perform the mission He intended to entrust to them. And it was necessary that they themselves were aware of their mission so that they would, with no doubt, answer Jesus' call. The same occurred when, at the Supper, He announced that one of the twelve would betray Him and pointed him, saying it was he who put his hand on the plate, and also said that Peter would deny Him.

870. In many passages of the Gospel, we can read: "But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said to them ..." But how could He know the thoughts of those who talked to Him, if not through the fluidic irradiation of their thoughts and, at the same time, using His spiritual sight which allowed Him to see through them?

871. A man does not know, but if he has a thought deeply buried in part of his soul, it is reflected like as if there is a kind of a mirror and this thought is reflected and shown in the irradiation of his own fluid. If we saw the mechanism of the invisible world around us, the ramification of the conductors of thought, linking all the intelligent beings, embodied and disembodied, the fluid carrying the moral signs, which, acting as air currents, traverse space, we would be surprised before certain effects that ignorance attributes to chance.

872. Cures - A woman suffered for twelve years with an hemorrhage. She spent all her savings with doctors and had no relief. When she heard that Jesus was there in the middle of a crowd, she went behind Him and touched His garments, because, as she said, if only she could touch His clothes, she would then be cured. As soon as she touched His garments, the blood flow stopped and she knew her body had been healed of that illness.

873. Then Jesus, feeling that virtue had gone through Him, turned around to the crowd and said, "Who touched my clothes"? His disciples said, " You see the crowd pressing You from all sides, and You ask: "Who touched me"? He went on looking to find out who had touched Him. The woman, who knew what had happened, in fear and dread went on her knees before Him and told Him the whole truth. Jesus said to her: "My daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be healed of your illness.

874. These words are significant, specially because He knew that the virtue had passed from His body to someone else. It means that the fluid went from Jesus to the sick woman. Both felt the fluid moving from one to another. Note that it was not caused by an act of Jesus' will. There was no magnetization nor laying on of the hands. The normal irradiation of fluid was enough to heal. But why did this irradiation go to that woman and not to someone else, since Jesus was not thinking specifically of her and He had a big crowd around Him? Very simple: the fluid is considered as a healing matter and it has to reach the organic matter in order to repair it. It can be guided to the illness with the willpower of the healer, or drawn by a very strong confidence, in a word: the patient's faith.

875. Regarding the fluid stream, sometimes it operates like a pump that pushes the fluid forward. Other times it operates like a suction pump. According to the case, they can work both at the same time. In some cases, only one of them operates. In this case precisely it worked like a suction pump. Jesus was right when He said: "Your faith has saved you". It is understood that the faith to which he referred to is not a mystic virtue, like many people believe, but a real attracting force, which draws the fluid. The one who does not have this force, usually has a contrary force, i.e., one that repels, or an inertial force, which paralyzes this action.

876. We can then understand why two people with the same illness can be taken to the same healer, and one is cured and the other one no. This is one of the most important principles of the healing mediumship, which explains certain apparent anomalies, but have a very natural cause.

877. The blind man of Bethsaida - Having arrived at Bethsaida, they brought to Him a blind man and begged Him to touch him. He took the blind man by the hand, led him out of the village, passed saliva on his eyes, and laying on of His hands, asked him if he saw something. The man said, "I see men walking that seem huge like trees". Jesus put His hands again over his eyes and he began to see better. He was so perfectly healed, that he could see everything clearly. Jesus sent him home, saying, "Go to your home, and if you come into town, tell everybody what happened to you.

878. Here, the magnetic effect is evident. The cure did not happen at once, but gradually and was caused by a repeated action, although faster than in ordinary magnetization. The first feeling the man had was exactly what the blind experience when they recover their sight. Due to an optical effect, the objects seem to be of very big.

Answers to the proposed questions

A. Do Spirits need the element called ethereal fluid?

Yes. Environment is always related to the nature of beings, who have to live in it: the fish in the water, earthly beings on land, or in the air, spiritual beings in the spiritual or ethereal fluid, even if they are on Earth. The ethereal fluid is for the Spirits what the air is for the living beings. However, in the same way that the fish cannot live in the air, land animals cannot live in a very rarefied atmosphere due to their lungs, and the lower Spirits cannot bear the brightness and the impression of the more ethereal fluids. They would not die if they lived in the middle of these fluids, because the Spirit does not die, but an instinctive force keeps them away from them, in the same way as the earthly creature moves away from a blazing fire or a very dazzling light. (Genesis, chapter XIV, item 11)

B. How do Spirits operate on fluids?

Spirits do not operate on the spiritual fluids like men manipulate gas. They use their thought to do it. Thought is for a Spirit what a hand is for a man. With they thought, they give to those fluids this or that direction, compact them, combine or disperse them, organize them to form sets with an appearance, shape, and a certain coloring. They change their properties in the same way a chemical changes the properties of gas or of other bodies, combining them according to certain laws. It is the great workshop or laboratory of spiritual life. Sometimes these changes are the result of an intention. Other times they are the product of an unconscious thought. For a Spirit it is enough that he thinks about something for it to materialize and appear, or, for instance, compose a melody for it to sound through the atmosphere. (Genesis, Chapter XIV, item 14)

C. How do Spirits create the objects they use?

Similarly to what was described in the previous question. The Spirit's thought creates the objects he is accustomed to using. Therefore, a miser will handle gold, a military will bring his guns and his uniform, a smoker his pipe, a farmer his plow and his oxen, an old woman her spinning wheel. For the Spirit, whose perispiritual wrap is also fluid, these fluidic objects are as real as they were in the material state, as when they were embodied. (Genesis, Chapter XIV, item 14)
