Handsome, The Colt

One day, roaming the areas around her home, Clara saw a beautiful little horse. The colt calmly ate the herbs it found in the field.

Enchanted with the horse, the girl wanted to have it for herself. As there was no one around there, Clara thought it was abandoned and decided to take it to her house.

Clara arrived home with the colt, led it into the yard, and got it a bowl of water as it should be thirsty.

Clara's mother, after finishing to tidy up the house, went out to put the broom outside, where it was usually stored. When she heard a strange noise, she went into the yard. Frightened, she saw

the colt grazing in her lawn.

- Oh, my God! What is this?!...

The girl ran to where her mother was and explained:

- Mom! I brought a horse to our house! Isn't it gorgeous? Its name is Handsome.

Surprised, the mother asked for an explanation:

- But how did you find this horse, Clara?

- It was alone! I think there is no one to look after it! So I brought it to our house, where it will be very happy, Mommy.

Wide-eyed, the mother wondered how to tell the truth to her daughter without hurting her:

- My dear, nobody leaves a beautiful horse like this abandoned! Certainly its owner will be sad to not find it in the place where he left it. We have to take it back. It is not ours! And we have no right to keep it.

- But I found it, Mom! Now it's mine! - she said, crying.

The mother sat on a chair, placed the little girl in her lap and hugged her daughter with love.

- Clara, let's think. Would you be happy if someone took away your kitten because he was on the street?

- Ah, but Biluca is mine! He has a home and we take care of him, Mom.

- That's right, honey. However, seeing him alone in the street, one can think that he has no owner.

The girl thought for a moment, and replied:

- I think you're right, Mom. If I lost Biluca, I would be very sad. But I so wanted this horse for myself... - and she began to cry.

The mother calmed her daughter down, as she wept with grief, and said:

- Clara, let's talk to its owner. Maybe he will let you be a friend of the horse?

The little girl smiled through her tears and nodded. Thus, both left to seek the land where Clara had found the colt. Finding it, they saw a very sad man sitting on a rock. Seeing them, he asked:

- Have you seen a lost horse around? I left it here in this land and went to fetch water; when I returned, he was gone! I do not know what else to do! ...

The mother exchanged a look with her daughter and Clara understood:

- I am so sorry, sir. I took your horse from here. As he was alone, I thought he had been abandoned, so I took him to my house.

Greatly relieved, the man whose name was Antonio, smiled:

- Praise God! I thought he had been stolen and I was about to contact the police! But, tell me, girl, is my horse well?

Clara smiled happy:

- Very well! He is grazing in our backyard. We live near here. Come with us. You'll see how he's okay.

Anthony thanked her and went with them. Entering the backyard, he saw the colt grazing the grass and a bowl of water next to him. Anthony ran and hugged the colt with great affection, glad to have found him. Then turned to Clara and said:

- You will always be welcome in my house, Clara. It is simple but friends are welcome. And when you are missing the colt you can go see him. Soon I will be training him, and you will be able to mount him. What do you think, Clara?

The girl smiled happy.

- Yes, I will go, rest assured, Anthony. Now that I know him, I want to be his friend. What's his name?

- He's called Handsome!

Clara looked at her mother and smiled with tears in her eyes:

- See, Mom? It is the name I gave him. Thank you, Anthony. Can I really go visit my friend Handsome?

- It will be a pleasure, Clara. And also I will teach you how to ride him. Then you can go out together.

Happy, after having accompanied Anthony to his house, Clara said good-bye to him and Handsome, promising to return there whenever she could.

Going back home and holding hands with her mother, she said:

- You were right, Mom. Antonio loves Handsome and would be sad if he did not find him anymore. I am glad you showed me that I had no right to keep him. Now we are friends, and whenever I want, I can see him! I think it was Jesus who warned me, through you, Mom. Thank you! ...
