Genesis

Allan Kardec

(Part 4)

Continuing with our methodical study of Genesis - Miracles and predictions according to Spiritism by Allan Kardec which had its first edition published on January 6, 1868. The answers to the questions suggested for discussion are at the end of the text below.

Questions for discussion

A. Why does Jesus call the Spirit of Truth, the Comforter?

B. Why is Spiritism considered the Comforter promised by Jesus?

C. What law, revealed by Spiritism, is considered the most important?

Reading Text

73. With reincarnation race and caste bias disappear, because the same Spirit can be born rich or poor, capitalist or proletarian, boss or subordinate, free or slave, man or woman. There are several arguments against the injustice of servitude and slavery, and against the subjection of women to the law of the strongest. However, none of these mentioned arguments resembles the logic of the material fact of reincarnation. If reincarnation bases the principle of universal fraternity on a law of Nature, it also uses the same law for the principle of social rights equality and, therefore, of freedom.

74. If the soul did not preexist, the doctrine of the original sin would not only be incompatible with the justice of God, which would make all men responsible for the fault of one. It would also be a contradiction, which would be even less acceptable to say that, according to this doctrine, the soul did not even exist at the time we want to make it already responsible.

75. The experimental Spiritism studied the properties of the spiritual fluids and their action over the matter. It demonstrated the existence of the perisprit, known since ancient times and named by St. Paul as "spiritual body", i.e., the fluidic body of the soul, after the consumption of the tangible body. Today we know that this casing is inseparable from the soul, it forms one of the constitutive elements of the human being, is the vehicle of transmission of thought and, during the body's life, serves as a link between the Spirit and matter.

76. The study of the properties of the perisprit, of the spiritual fluids and the physiological attributes of the soul opens new horizons for Science and gives the key to a multitude of until then misunderstood phenomena, due to the lack of knowledge of the law that governs them. They are, among many, the phenomena of second sight, distance vision, the natural and artificial somnambulism, the psychological effects of lethargy and catalepsy, the foreknowledge, premonitions, apparitions, transfiguration, transmission of thought, fascination, instant cures, obsessions and possessions, and so on.

77. Far from denying or destroying the Gospel, Spiritism instead confirms, explains and develops, by means of the new laws of Nature, which it reveals, all that Christ said and did. It clarifies the obscure points of Christian teachings, in such a way that for those who certain parts of the Gospel were unintelligible, or seemed unacceptable, they begin to understand and accept it with no difficulty, with the aid of this doctrine. They understand its extension and can distinguish between reality and allegory; Christ appears to them superior: now he is not a simple philosopher, He is a divine Messiah.

78. Besides, if one considers the moralizing power of Spiritism, due to the purpose it gives to all actions of life, if we consider that the consequences of good and evil actions almost become tangible, its moral strength, the courage and the consolation it offers in affliction, its unalterable confidence in the future, the idea of the possibility of being near the ones we loved, the assurance of being able to meet them again, the possibility of talking to them. Finally, because of the certainty that whatever we have done, what we acquired as intelligence, wisdom, morality, until the last hour of our life is not lost, and all of it increases the progress of Spiritism. This is why Spiritism is considered to accomplish all Christ's promises regarding the Comforter announced.

79. If we add to these results the prodigious way Spiritism spreads, despite what is done to destroy it, we cannot deny that its arrival was providential, considering the way it triumphs over all forces and men's bad will.

80. The sufferers are in large numbers. Therefore, it is not surprising that so many people uphold a doctrine that consoles, mainly addressed for those who are in despair, because Spiritism is meant more for the ones who suffer than the ones who are happy.

81. Moses personified the first revelation, Christ the second one, and the third has no individual to personify it. The first two were individual, and the third one is collective. Here is an essential feature of great importance. It is collective because it does not exist specifically nor is it offered as a privilege to nobody. Therefore, nobody can name himself as its sole prophet. Spiritism spread simultaneously over the earth, to millions of people of all ages and conditions, from the lowest to the highest level.

82. The first two revelations, being a result of a personal teaching, were inevitably located, i.e., they appeared in one only area, around which they gradually spread. However, it took many centuries for them to reach the world. The third revelation is characterized by the fact that not being personalized it appeared simultaneously in thousands of different points, which became centers of diffusion.

83. This circumstance, unprecedented in the history of doctrines, gives it an exceptional strength and an overwhelming power of action. In fact, if they pursue it at a determined point, it is physically impossible to pursue it everywhere and in all countries. If its action is limited in one determined point, there are thousands of others where it will flourish. Moreover, if it is possible to destroy it in one individual, even though the Spirits, which are the source from where Spiritism emanates, they cannot be reached. Since the Spirits are everywhere and will always exist, imagining that Spiritism could be suffocated in the world, it would reappear shortly after, because it is based on the fact that it belongs to Nature and one cannot suppress the laws of Nature.

Answers to the proposed questions

A. Why does Jesus call the Spirit of Truth, the Comforter?

When calling the new Messiah the Comforter, Jesus predicted that men would need to be consoled. This implies in the failure of those consolations they believed they would find in the new religion they were going to institute. Perhaps Christ was never so clear, so explicit, as in these words, to which very few people paid attention, probably because they avoided to clarify them, and to understand their prophetic meaning. (Genesis, Chapter I, items 26 to 28).

B. Why is Spiritism considered the Comforter promised by Jesus?

Spiritism does not deny the Gospel, but instead confirms, explains and develops all that Christ said and did, and it also clarifies the obscure points of Christian teachings, in such a way that for those who certain parts of the Gospel were unintelligible, or seemed unacceptable, they begin to understand and accept it with no difficulty, with the aid of this doctrine. They understand its extension and can distinguish between reality and allegory. Besides, if one considers the moralizing power of Spiritism, due to the purpose it gives to all actions of life, if we consider that the consequences of good and evil actions almost become tangible, its moral strength, the courage and the consolation it offers in affliction, we will arrive to the conclusion that it fulfills all Christ's promises regarding the Comforter. Therefore, it is licit to consider him the promised Comforter. (Genesis, Chapter I, items 30, 41 and 42).

C. What law, revealed by Spiritism, is considered the most important?

Plurality of existences is one of the most important Spiritist laws. It shows its truth and importance to progress. Through the plurality of existences, man explains all the apparent anomalies of human life, the differences in social status, premature deaths and the difference of intellectual and moral skills, the old age of the Spirit that more or less learned and progressed and, when reincarnated, brings with him what he acquired in his previous existences. With reincarnation, race and caste bias disappear, because the same Spirit can be born rich or poor, capitalist or proletarian, boss or subordinate, free or slave, man or woman. (Genesis, Chapter I, items 34 and 36).
