Mediumship meetings open to the public. Is it possible?

Neophytes think it is weird in the field of Spiritism, why in some Spiritist Centers séances are still open to the public and curious.

Indeed, although the fact has been common in the past, nowadays the séance should deserve greater attention by the spiritists leaders, especially when so many serious authors have spoken reporting what it is and what its high purposes.

More than one spiritual benefactor has told us that a medium sessions, especially when its goal is the clarification of disembodied entities, resembles an infirmary, with funds raised from Spirituality for treatment of troubled and unhappy creatures who attend there. It is not understood, therefore, that it is open to curious, countering specific guidance made by authors such as Cairbar Schutel ("Mediums and Mediumship", p. 53 and 72), Carlos Imbassahy ("On the Fringes of Spiritism," p. 239 and 240) and Spártaco Banal ("The Practice Sessions of Spiritism", chap. VIII, p. 37), even before the advent of the works of André Luiz in the Brazilian publishing scenario.

Allan Kardec, the Encoder of spiritual doctrine, had already addressed the issue when he answered to who proposed him to open to the public sessions of the Parisian Society of Spiritist Studies, measure which he disagreed. ("Spiritist Magazine", 1861, p. 140.)

It was asked to Divaldo Franco: "Should the mediumship meetings be public? Why?"

The well-known medium and speaker replied: "Encoder recommends small groups, due to the difficulties that there are in large groups, in relation to the vibrating tuning and harmony of thoughts. A public character psychic meeting is an unnecessary risk, because people come with the most diverse feelings that will disrupt invariably operation of mediumship. Benefactors claim that a meeting mediumship is a serious work, which develops in the perispiritic field, and if the team does not have a specialized knowledge, it is understandable that many problems succeeding negligent of it. The mediumship meeting should not be of a public nature, because it would feature speculative, exhibitionist, devoid of higher purpose, such attitudes go against the moral postulates of Doctrine.

"Even in private séances should maintain an optimum number of members, not exceeding 20 persons, for avoiding these natural disturbances in massive clusters. Where there is a psychic group with great number, should be divided into two separate work groups (because in the Spirit Movement, the order of the well, divide is to multiply the benefit of those that are spread). It is also necessary that people are related to each other in the group. For obvious reasons, if we are in a medium session and we are not sympathetic to an individual, any communication which he does our repressions and conflicts put us hoods, believing to be indirectly addressed to us. If, by chance, someone we are not friendly, when he goes into a trance we were bombing: 'Imagine he is pretending; see if I'll believe in him!' We formed thus a transmitting antenna of difficulties for the partner who is being attacked by our mind, as long as the individual is a medium, he is not only for the disembodied spirits, but also for the embodied.

"The success of a psychic meeting depends on the team that there appears not just the medium. Mentors schedule, but that team operating will respond the results. It is never enough to recommend that the séance should be private nature." ("Safety Guidelines" question 42.)

Reiterating Kardec warnings and the authors mentioned, André Luiz warns: "Let us in the place of disembodied unbalanced and understand, at once, the inappropriateness of the presence of any stranger to such public welfare." ("Disobsession" chap. 18.)

And the well-known spiritual author said more:

"The disobsession service is not a department for social courtesies that, even respectable, it is not compatible with nursing spiritual being developed, the benefit of disembodied brothers who faced bitter difficulties.

"Still, there are cases in which fellow construction Christian-Spiritist when requesting permission to do so, may have access to the service, on a constructive observation, however, it must preserve carefully not welcome them in large numbers due to vibrating climate meeting not experience disruptive changes.

"However, these visits should be received only in rare circumstances and in really acceptable circumstances for the work of obsession, especially when it objectifies the foundation of similar activities. And before required admission it is imperative that the spiritual mentors of the group are consulted beforehand, due to respect to the responsibilities that they embrace, in favor of the team, even though we know the orientation of the spiritist activities hold itself in Spiritism and not at the free will of friends disembodied, even those who witness high condition." ("Disobsession" chap. 21.)
