Abortion release back
on the scene again

Today
, when this magazine is celebrating 6 years of life, we are obviously very happy, but at the same time worried because certain issues that we discussed in the first issue of the magazine still, unfortunately, in the agenda of discussions that occur in our country. One concerns the abortion issue.

In section Spiritism answers from our inaugural theme was treated exactly the proposal made by the then Minister of Health, towards the liberalization of abortion.

The text published on the occasion reminded us how Spiritism examines the issue of abortion, a practice which, as noted, involves three unfortunate misunderstandings by those who promote it:

1). Prevents a spirit to reincarnate and therefore progresses.

2.) Refuses the arrival of a son who is perhaps the instrument that God has given to parents to help them in the evolutionary journey through care, waivers, and the concerns that would have.

3.) Violates the divine commandment "Thou shalt not kill", without giving the victim a chance of defense.

As we know, in many countries the liberalization of abortion practiced without just cause already has the support of the Act, as the Minister of Health of the previous government intended. However, according to Spiritism, this practice will never find justification before God, except in really specific cases when the honest doctor, sincere and conscientious believes that the continued pregnancy endangers the mother's life. (The link that refers the text to the reader is -http://www.oconsolador.com.br/1/oespiritismoresponde.html.)

Six years have passed and today what we see is that the intent of certain government sectors, have been gathered a group of doctors who, taking advantage of their position at the head of the Federal Council of Medicine, persists in the same way, forgetting that Medicine is in the world to save, not to kill people.

The doctor and professor Dr. Alexander Moreira-Almeida, College of Medicine, Federal University of Juiz de Fora, MG, indignant at the position signed by the Federal Council of Medicine, released in late March an open letter published in the last edition, in this same magazine, in the section "Letters."

Here's an excerpt from the Letter to the CFM and the Regional Council of Medicine of Minas Gerais:

"I reiterate my indignation to the CFM position to defend the legalization of eugenic abortion ('when the fetus suffers from severe and incurable defects that impede independent living') and abortion up to 12 weeks of pregnancy if the mother wishes.

A position like this, it will completely against the tradition Brazilian medical defense of life and pursuit of offering care to those suffering, it could only be considered after a broad discussion with the medical community in Brazil and reaching a consensus."

In the Letter, the author points out that, unlike announced in a statement released by the CFM, the theme was not widely debated among doctors: "At no point I saw publications or was notified that the CFM was considering presenting a position in this regard. I did a research on the topic of abortion in the CFM site and it was not found a wording to indicate that the CFM discussed a formal position on the issue."

In another passage, Dr. Alexander says: "(...) there are serious internal contradictions to the note published by CFM. Says that abortion is a crime, but defends its legality. It is used a variety of euphemisms to mask their arbitrarily decision on behalf of 400,000 doctors. They say there is no 'decriminalization of abortion', but creating 'causes exclusive of illegality'. I think it is underestimated the intelligence of doctors."

We expect this position so clear about the abortion issue will help raise awareness among lawmakers and rulers of this country, that proposed projects like this has the fate they deserve: a drawer, rather, the trash basket.
