The Mediums' Book

Allan Kardec

(Part 3)

We continue the methodical study of the Pentateuch Kardec, which focuses on the five major works of the spiritual doctrine, in the order they were first published by Allan Kardec, the Encoder of Spiritualism.

The answers to the questions suggested for discussion was the end of the text below.

Questions

A. Why is there evil spirits that are not worth more than the called demons ?

B. How to prevent the inconveniences which presents the Spiritist practice?

C. Good spirits can inflate the bitterness and hate among men?

D. It is possible for man to scrutinize the principle of things?

Text for reading

21. The means of conviction vary greatly according to individuals, what persuades one has no effect on others, such person is convinced by certain physical manifestations, and another for intelligent communications, the largest number by reasoning. For most who are not ready for reasoning, material phenomena are lightweight. (Item 29)

22. We do not recommend ignoring the facts, as it was for them to come to the theory. We say only that, without thinking, they are not sufficient to secure the conviction, and that a previous explanation, destroying the prejudices and showing that they have nothing contrary to reason, predisposes to accept them. (Item 34)

23. When the strange phenomena of Spiritualism began to occur, there were several systems that tried to explain them. The denial systems, ie systems of the opponents of Spiritualism was the object of study in the introduction and conclusion The Spirit's Book and in the work What is Spiritism. (Item 37)

24. Proponents of the system evil or demonic should not be placed among the opponents of Spiritualism, on the contrary. However, if the beings who communicate are angels or demons are incorporeal beings. Admit this manifestation is to admit the possibility of communication with the unseen world or at least part of it. (Item 46)

25. It is very difficult to persuade a mother who lost her son wanted to give you and that comes after death, proof of affection and identity, is an agent of Satan. Sure, there are spirits among the very poor and not worth more than those who are called demons. And the reason is simple: there are very bad men, and that death does not immediately become better. The question is whether they are the ones to communicate. The Church recognizes, however, as some authentic manifestations of the Virgin and other saints, apparitions, visions, etc. oral communications. This belief is not in contradiction with the doctrine of demons exclusive? (Item 46)

26. The system multispiritist or polyspiritist, unlike other systems, is the result of a complete observation and can be summarized in the following general principles:

1st - The spiritualistic phenomena are produced by intelligences-body, or by spirits.

2nd - The spirits are the invisible world, are everywhere, including around us, and we are in contact with them.

3rd - The Spirits react incessantly about the physical world and the moral world and are one of the powers of Nature.

4th - Spirits are the souls of those who lived on Earth or on other worlds and that is stripped of its casing body, the souls of men are incarnated spirits, when we die, we become spirits.

5 - There are spirits of all degrees of goodness and wickedness, knowledge and ignorance. (1)

6th - The Spirits are subject to the law of progress and everyone can reach perfection, but being endowed with free will, reach-in a time shorter or longer, according to their efforts and their will.

7th - They are happy, according to the good or evil they have done during the life and advances to which they arrived. The bliss and without shadows is shared only by the spirits who came to the supreme degree of perfection.

8th - All spirits, under given circumstances, can manifest itself to men, the number who can communicate is undefined.

9th - The spirits communicate through mediums who serve as their instruments and performers.

10th - Recognize the superiority or inferiority of the Spirits by their language. The good counsel good, and not only say good things, all of them attests elevation. The poor fool and his words carry the stamp of imperfection and ignorance. (Item 49)

27. The various systems that have been reviewed, not excepting those with a negative sense, rest on few observations, however incomplete or misinterpreted. If a house is red on one side and white on the other, who saw only one side will claim that it is red, one that is white: both have and have no reason. But who saw the house on all sides say that it is red and white, and only he will be right. (Item 49)

28. The same happens with the belief that it is of Spiritualism; can be certain about the true and false to generalize what is only partial, if we assume that the rule is an exception. That is why we say that anyone who wants to seriously study this science, and should observe very long. (Item 49)

29. The system of material soul assumes that the soul and perispirit would not be two different things, or rather the perispirit would be the very soul, that depuraria several transmigrations, as the alcohol clears the various distillations. (Item 50)

30. The Spiritist Doctrine, however, considers the perispirit simply as a fluid envelope of the soul or spirit. (Item 50)

Answers to questions

A. Why is there evil spirits that are not worth more than the called demons?

The fact is true and the reason is simple: there is very bad men, and that death does not immediately become better. There are spirits more than the souls of these men and not being perfect, it follows that there are spirits also imperfect and whose character is reflected in their communications. (The Mediums' Book, item 46.)

B. How to prevent the inconveniences which presents the Spiritist practice?

The best way to prevent the inconveniences that may make the practice of Spiritualism is not forbid it, but make it understood. God gave us reason and judgment to assess the spirits as much as men. One fear is not impressive imagination more than a minute and does not affect the whole world. The reality is demonstrated clearly understood by all. Prior knowledge of the theory and spirit scale will give us conditions to understand and control the demonstrations. (Ibid., item 46.)

C. Good spirits can inflate the bitterness and hate among men?

No, do not instill good spirits never bitterness or discord. Those who act thus are imperfect spirits, which, due to their inferiority, can induce men to disunity. Good spirits have to do good goal and that is what characterizes them. (Ibid., item 50.)

D. It is possible for man to scrutinize the principle of things?

No, because the principle of things, as taught in The Book of Spirits, is the secrets of God. Want to scroll with the help of Spiritualism which still is not the business of mankind is to divert him from his true end. That man apply Spiritualism in its moral improvement, this is essential because the only way to progress is to become better. (Ibid., item 51.)
