The toy horse

As every child does, Antonio had his dreams. He wished to have a beautiful wooden toy Horse to play with.

His family, therefore, was very poor and his father was not able to buy this toy. Antonio was aware of that, and therefore was not asking anything from him. He only dreamed about it.

At night, before bedtime, he pretended to be riding a beautiful wooden horse. On his birthday, his dad gave him a small football. He was eight years old now. It was not the toy horse he wanted but it was a colourful ball. He was really happy with it, since he knew how much it meant for his father since he had to work hard to be able to buy it.

One day he was playing with it and he saw a boy staring at his new ball. Antonio was a very good child, and felt compassion for the other boy. He approached the other boy who then said:

— What a beautiful ball! I always wished having one like this.

Antonio felt he should give it to the boy and decided to do it:

— It’s yours. You can take it.

— Are you giving me your beautiful ball?! — the boy was really surprised with his gesture, and could not believe this was happening to him.

Antonio affirmed to him he wanted the boy to have the ball. The boy then got the ball with both hands, turned around and went running with it. He was so happy he was screaming.

Antonio also smiled. Why should he not satisfy the boy’s wish? After all, he knew how it feels to wish for something and not be able to have it. When his father got back home, he told him what happened.

— Well done, my son. We should not be selfish. Are you not going to miss your ball?

— No, dad. I will play with other toys. Didn’t Jesus teach us we should do to others what we would like to have done for us? If I was on his place, I would have liked to get the ball. So, I decided to give it to him. I am feeling so happy today!

His dad looked at him with admiration and said:

— Jesus is very happy with you, my son. He will reward you for this, for sure.

Two days later, when Antonio came back home after school, he got into his room and found something different there. In the middle of his room, he saw a beautiful horse toy! He got so surprised and scared; afraid it would disappear from his room.

His father entered the room and saw him looking and wondering what that meant.

— My boss sent you these toys. They belonged to her son, but since he has grown older he doesn’t play with them anymore. So, she decided to give them to you. Do you like it?

— It is the most beautiful toy I have ever seen in my life! — said Antonio whilst hugging and kissing his new toy horse.

He then got up and said:

— I think Jesus must have felt happy with me, dad. He sent me this lovely gift!
