The circus has arrived

Gerald was walking down the street, kicking stones. When he turned into a corner, he saw a colourful poster where a lion and a tamer could be seen.

— Wow! The circus has arrived!

Gerald always had an attraction for the circus, but it rarely appeared at his small town. He looked for coins in his pockets; therefore he wasn’t able to find any. He just found a few stickers, a stone and a slingshot.

— How am I going to be able to go to the circus?

He thought and said:

— Right! I know what to do! I will ask my mummy for cash.

Once he came back home, Gerald asked his mother and she said:

— Yes, I can give it to you but you need to clean the backyard.

— Clean the backyard? Work? No way!

Gerald went to the grocery story and met his friend Joseph:

— Dear Joseph, can I please borrow a coin from you? I want to go to the circus but I have no money on me.

— For sure my dear Gerald. I will give you a coin if you do me a favour. Can you please deliver these orders for me?

The boy said:

— Unfortunately, I can’t do it. I need to study today.

On his way back home, the boy passed by his neighbour Lucia. She was clean the pavement and Gerald decided to ask her for a coin.

— Of course, my dear! I will give you a coin, but I am so busy today! Can you please help with the garden? I need you to help me clean it. I will give you two coins, instead of one!

The boy then said:

— Unfortunately, I can’t. Mom is waiting for me. See you soon.

Gerald doesn’t like to do anything and everyone knows about it. The boy was anxious as he could see the time going by and not being able to go to the circus! At night, he went closer to the place where the circus was installed.

It was beautiful, full of lights and seemed to be inviting him to go in. But how?

Gerald remembered if he had done any service he had the opportunity to do earlier, he could no to go the circus. It was too late! Tonight was his last chance to watch it as the circus was leaving next morning.

He sat down at the pathway and watched people going by. Suddenly, an old lady let her bag drop on the floor and all her things fall from it. The boy immediately helped her:

— Are you ok, Mrs.? — he asked.

— I am fine, my son. Thank you. Thank God I didn’t get hurt. I might feel a bit of pain for a few days; that’s all.

They boy helped her to collect all her belongings and put it back in her back. After the shock, she asked Gerald to help her cross the road. He realised the bag was very heavy and said:

— I will do that, Mrs. I will go over to your house with you and help you carry it.

— How nice of you! I don’t want to disturb you, my son...I am sure you have so much to do...

He thought about the circus and said:

— Well, actually... I have nothing to do.

Gerald helped her to get to her house. The old lady then opened her front door, opened her bag and gave him a coin:

— Thank you my son. This is for you. Buy what you want with it and come to see me any time soon!

Gerald was very surprised with her attitude. It was exactly what he needed to be able to buy the ticket. When he least expected, he got what he so desired. Gerald then understood that, since he helped the old lady, he was also helped. He also realised when we want something, we have to make an effort to get it. The more we help, the more help we get in exchange.

Then, he bought the ticket and had a lot of fun that night at the circus.
