Fear and its effects in
our world

Commonly known, after the last terrorist attacks which took place in that country, the Americans are more and more trapped in their own houses and with very different habits, in response to the anxiety because of the violence, the social status and the environment itself. Fear has transformed the homes, in America, into bunkers

The situation is not, however, only common in North America. The feeling of fear, mainly in large cities, such as Rio and São Paulo, has been shown by the means of communication in our country, where many people feel like not going out at night, for the sake of fear, subject which deserves to be analyzed thoroughly in our society.

Kardec, for example, comparing the stories created to scare children, a resource that had been largely used in catechism long ago, says that fear may kill and, if it does not, it may unbalance the fragile minds that are easily impressed by such facts.

According to information from the Spirit-world, it does not happen only here, among the incarnated ones, but also occurs in the Spirit-world, as it is revealed by André Luiz in his book “Nosso Lar”, psychographed by Chico Xavier, published in 1944 by the Brazilian Spiritist Federation (FEB).

The main story of this book takes place in the time of the World War II. André Luiz says that news from the battles in Europe created at the spiritual colony of Nosso Lar, located near Rio de Janeiro, situations of fear and, sometimes, panic, so much as the Governor of the colony itself had to intervene.

On a Sunday morning, great crowd gathered to listen to the Governor. Tall, thin, wearing a white vest, penetrating eyes, the Governor opened a book, browsed it quickly and started reading: “And ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all {these things} must come to pass, but the end is not yet.” (Matthew, 24:6). After saying these encouraging words, the leader requested that 30,000 servers got enlisted to the defense service of the city, due to the European war. “Brethren of Nosso Lar, we shall not give in”, the Governor said. “Fear does not build, nor does anxiety. We need to be worthy of the trumpets of the Lord, responding to the Divine Will in silent work, on our duties.”

To André Luiz, who reported it, it seemed like such preoccupation, by the board of the colony, was a bit exaggerated, when Narcisa told him: “The percentage of human existences destroyed by such vibrations is high, for it is as contagious as any other disease. Fear is one of the worst enemies of the creature, since it is within the soul, attacking us deeply” (“Nosso Lar”, chap. 42, p. 231).

Later on, completing the succession of surprises reported by the author, Narcisa added: “The Board puts the training against fear even before the nursing lessons”. “Serenity is the guarantee to success.” (Same book, p. 232.)
