Luis Otávio Henrique:

“Spiritism gives us what
we need”

The presidente of Dr Adolfo Bezerra de Menezes Spiritist Centre
in the Brazilian city of Pongaí speaks about his experience
in the Spiritist Movement

Luis Otávio Henrique (photo), a Biologist, lives inthe town of Pongaí, in the Brazilian state of São Paulo, working in the local council for 10 years. A Spiritist since 2004, he is the current presidente of Dr Adolfo Bezerra de Menezes Spiritist Centre. He is a Spiritist speaker, involved in the Spiritist Movement in Pongaí and in the region, as he expla-

ins in this interview:

Tell us first a bit the town of Pongaí.

Pongaí is near the city of Bauru. Its main economic activity is agriculture, especially sugar cane production, which is booming. We have no major social problems as the local authorities have the resources to meet the main demands.

When was Dr Adolfo Bezerra de Menezes Spiritist Centre founded?

It opened officially on January 1st 1937, but many fellow Spiritists had already meeting in their homes before they decided to formally found the Group.

In a small town, they must have faced strong prejudice from the local community at the time. What is the situation like now?

There were many difficult situations in the past indeed, involving prejudice against Spiritism, but that is not the case anymore. We have a united group that strives to carry on studying the Spiritist Teachings. Our volunteer workers communicate well and work as a team, always trying to improve in the tasks assigned to them.

What aspect or event you would highlight from these eight decades of work?

We have records of materialisation sessions that took place here many years ago. It is important to mention that the Spiritist Centre also worked as a homeless shelter during a long time.

How did you celebrate the Centre’s 80th anniversary?

We had a number of activities planned by the women who work as volunteers here, especially Nelzy and Nilza Moreti, from the Moreti family, which are part of the Spiritist Centre’s history.

Based on your experience in the Spiritist Movement, which aspect of Spiritism means the most to you?

I am particularly fond of Spiritist talks and lectures. That is an area in which I work too, in our town and other Spiritist Centres in the region. I also like the theoretical side of Spiritism and the study groups, which I believe are essential. I also care a great deal for mediumship work and work in this area in our Group and in Gil Pimenta Moura Spiritist Centre, in the city of Lins.

What else would you like to add?

Christ has left us his legacy of love… May we follow up on the dissemination of the Master’s Teachings, taking into account the fact that people are lacking so much direction and guidance. When touched by the Gospel, they feel comforted and loved, as many people are so vulnerable in so many ways.

What are your final thoughts?

Spiritism gives us what we need: guidance, knowledge, wisdom and a special way of looking into difficult situations and internal conflicts.

The Third Revelation is the Promised Consoler that soothes the pain, channelling positive energies and the true love of Christ.

I am grateful to God for the opportunity of being part of these amazing Teachings, which can provide a bit of comfort to friends who take part of our meetings and talks.

May peace be with every one of those who read these words.
