Isa Rita Polito Vita:

“People need to wake up to the need to carrying out
their inner reform”

The Spiritist author and speaker talks about her work in the Spiritist Movement and the books she has written

Isa Rita Polito Vita (photo) lives in her hometown of Juiz de Fora, in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. She is an awarded Spiritist writer and speaker and a director at the Dom Pedro II Spiritist Centre. In this interview she speaks about how she got to know Spiritism, her Spiritist short stories and novels and her overall work in the Spiritist Move-

ment.

When and how did you become a Spiritist?

Well, a number of things happened at the same time: mediunimic phenomena in our house, like objects flying around, chairs moving, and the sound of steps; the loss of a family member; and clearer mediunimic phenomena involving a brother-in-law, who invited me so we could find in the Spiritist Teachings the answers for so many things we simply could not explain. All that happened in 1992. Our time had come to get to know these wonderful Teachings, which explains everything and lifts a veil of so many mysterious things.

Your Spiritist talks are very well research and presented. Should that be the main requirement for those who wish to work as Spiritist speakers?

Yes, because we carry a huge responsibility of passing on the Spiritist Teachings and that must be done in a clear and truthful manner. We must bear in mind that we are being heard by incarnates and discarnates. Depending on the issue we are addressing, the Spiritual Benefactors record the talk and play it in areas where discarnate spirits need to hear it.

What is the best way of remaining faithful to the work codified by Allan Kardec?

It is to read always the five basic works of Kardec, which contain the Teachings from the Spirits. The Teachings were dictated by them and Kardec did a brilliant job compiling them. Any new Spiritist book or work must, therefore, be checked against the basic teachings to see if they clash or not. I can quote Kardec here when he advised us to “use the sieve of reason”. We need to be open to all new work. But we need to use the sieve of reason, as Kardec’s widow, Amélie Bouchet, did after he passed away whenever she wanted to publish anything on the Spiritist Review.

What do you think the public who attend Spiritist meetings need to hear the most?

That is a difficult question. All the Teachings from Jesus need to be heard so we can have the guidelines to seek spiritual progress. After all, that is the goal we strive to achieve in our incarnations on earth: to reach relative perfection. Absolute perfection is something reserved to God. That is why it is so important that we hear about the importance of forgiving, about unshaken faith, love for other people, charity and the need to tackle our selfishness and pride. People need to wake up urgently for the need to carry out their inner reform.

In your talks, what themes do you like to discuss?

The passages from Our Master Jesus, who set out through his example the rules we should follow. If we behave the way he did, we will be on the right path for spiritual growth. His parables are immensely rich. If we study and analyse them well we will be able to read between the lines much more than we can imagine.

Tell us a bit about the many books you have written.

When I write for children, I focus on stories that deal with the Teachings of Jesus, such as the importance of love, charity, forgiveness, humility and the need of getting rid of all types of prejudices. When I write for adults, my main concern is to make a call for the need to adopt certain attitudes that have an impact, such as preserving nature, respecting and loving others, doing charity and tackling abortion, preconceived ideas, anorexia and bullying. I am working in a second booked written through automatic writing or psycography.

You are known for your passion for D. Pedro II [who was Brazil’s last emperor and was sent to exile after the proclamation of Republic in 1889]. What would you like to say about him?

I am a volunteer worker in a Spiritist Centre named after him. I do admire him greatly. He was a spirit called Longinus who was asked by Jesus himself to take on the post of Emperor of Brazil [in the XIX Century]. He represented a great deal for our nation. He was an honest, charitable and human man, who knew how to govern with love and balance. His delay in putting an end to slavery was a sensible worry to do it gradually in a country whose economy was based on slave work. But he always displayed his horror to that inhumane practice. He fulfilled what he promised Jesus until the end and he was very dignified in the face of the people’s ingratitude, sending him into exile. He was offered four tonnes and a half of gold, which he refused to take with him. He still looks after the destiny of our country from the Spirit World.
