The Lazy Bunny
|
|
Roger belonged
to a good family
of bunnies who
were concerned
with his
education.
 |
They lived in a
beautiful place,
around many
other animals
and close to the
city.
Realising that
Roger did not
like to work,
Mother Rabbit
tried to guide
him by saying:
- Honey! In this
life we all have
to be useful in
some way. We all
need to work in
something. God
did not give us
life so we were
a burden to
nature.
But the bunny
always fled from
any kind of
noble effort.
One day, he left
home upset
because his
mother had asked
him to help her
with the
housework chores
by sweeping the
small lair where
they

|
lived. |
|
Hopping along a
path Roger kept
complaining.
When he felt
tired, he sat in
the shade of a
tree on the edge
of a stream.
As he was lazy,
he sighed and
said:
- Ah! I would
like to be like
this stream and
do nothing!
To his surprise,
he heard a voice
saying:
- Great mistake.
I work a lot. I
carry very
carefully the
water that will
benefit the
crops and will
be used by human
beings in
various
services. And
birds and
animals come to
me to quench
their thirst.
Also, many
fishes live in
me.
Startled, Roger
thought for a
bit,
contemplating a
spotted cow
ruminating on a
pasture nearby,
then considered:
- Well, then I
would like to be
like that cow
that spends all
day doing
nothing. She
just eats and
sleeps.
The cow, who had
heard what the
bunny had said,
leaned against
the fence and
bellowed:
- Mooo… mooo...
What do you mean
I do not do
anything? I give
milk every
morning. Not to
mention that
very often, my
sisters give up
their life so
that men can
feed.
Disappointed by
the reaction of
the animal, the
rabbit looked
around trying to
find someone who
did not do
anything.
The tree, which
had kept silent
until that
moment, chimed
in:
- Do not look at
me! I work too.
I give flowers
and fruits that
serve as food. I
shelter birds,
small animals
and insects in
my strong
branches. Also,
everyone likes
to rest on my
welcoming shade.

The sheep, who
had approached
them to join the
conversation,
explained that
she provided
wool to make
warm clothing;
the chicken

scuffing
nearby
said
that she
gave her
eggs for
food,
and even
a spider
that was
weaving
her web
on a
branch,
had a
job:

- If it were not
for me feeding
on flies and
small insects
that exist in
the air, your
life would be
terrible! - she
said proudly.
The bunny was
very
embarrassed. He
was the only one
that did not
like to do
anything.
Roger returned
home thoughtful.
There he found
his mother busy
looking for food
for the family.
Without saying a
word, he picked
up the broom and
began to work.
