The Grumpy Boy

Mark was a nine-year-old boy who was constantly unhappy with life. He was never happy with anything. He complained of everything and his mother worried about him.

One day it was raining a lot and the boy watched the rain fall through a window and noticed the raindrops that were running down the glass.

Annoyed, he complained:

- What the heck! It is like this rain will never end! And I'm stuck at home doing nothing!... What a nuisance.

His mother, who heard the child's complaint, responded with an excited smile:

- We must remember, honey, that the rain is a blessing from God to help crops so that there will be no lack of food for the community and the animals! Isn’t it impor-

tant? If plants do not grow, what will you eat?

- Yeah, on second thought, Mom, the rain has its good side but I don’t have anything to do.

- Of course you do, Mark! I love rainy days! Do you know why?

The boy shook his head, and she explained:

- Because I think it's great when it rains and we can stay at home reading a story book or watching a good movie! And eating popcorn and drinking a hot drink. And there are also other things that we can do. Just use your imagination.

- Yeah... thinking so, the day is not at all lost. I can play at home, play an interesting game or watch a movie on TV, or... - and Mark lined up a number of things that could be done without leaving the house.

And his kind mother continued talking:

- That's right, darling. So, let's enjoy our rainy day?

- Yes, Mom!

They entertained themselves all day with books, movies and even games. Later, by late afternoon, the rain stopped and Mark complained again as he went to the garden:

- Wow, that's hot! Well, with such a strong

sun like this, I cannot even play outside! What a nuisance! ...

His mother again smiled and considered:

- Mark, if it were not for the warmth of the sun after the rain, the plants could not grow and get ripe, to be harvested and brought to the table of the people! How then would you enjoy the fruit you like so much?

- Oh, Mom! You have an answer for everything. I know that the sun is important but without exaggeration, right? Remember how I got all burned at the beach?

- Yes, I remember, Mark, but you overdid it. When the sun is strong, we have to be careful and avoid it because it can cause burns.

The boy had his head dizzy with so many thoughts and replied:

- Oh, Mom, this way you get me confused and not knowing what is best or how to act!…

His mother smiled and explained to the boy with a confused expression:

- Sweetheart, the truth is that God always knows what to do. We need rain and sun alike! Have you ever thought if it rained every day? Or if it was sunny every day?

The boy put his hand on his head, thinking about it, and opened his eyes wide, saying:

- It would be a bummer!

- More than that, it would be a tragedy! - the mother agreed, continuing - So, Mark, we must thank God who makes all of the different seasons! At the beginning of the year we have summer1, then in March comes autumn, in June comes winter, in September spring, in December summer, and in March it starts all over again! So there's no time to complain of any season!

- That's nice, Mom! I had never thought of that! God is creative, isn’t He?

- Yes, Mark. God, Our Father and Creator of the Universe, knows what He does!

- Mom, I never noticed that everything worked so well. When I say a prayer, I will thank God for His wisdom and congratulate our Great Father!

1 - Because Brazil is located in the South Hemisphere the seasons there are opposite to those in the North Hemisphere. That is, when it is summer in the South Hemisphere it is winter in the North Hemisphere and so on.
