Gifts for Mothers

Lucy had a little dog that she had gotten on her fifth birthday from her father and whom she loved very much. She had named it Zuzu. Despite her young age, Lucy had always looked after Zuzu with much love. Now, seven, Lucy still had never neglected her little friend Zuzu.

However, one day Zuzu saw the house gate open and went out into the street. When Lucy arrived home from school she went looking for her little friend but could not find her! Worried, she cried a lot. Her mother and her brother Marcel helped to search the neighbourhood, but no one could give news of Zuzu. A neighbour consoled her:

- Lucy, don’t be sad. Zuzu will return. Animals have strong instincts and return home.

- Then I'll be waiting here at the gate for Zuzu!

Less worried now and certain that Zuzu would come back, she sat at the gate and stayed there. She told what had happened to everyone who passed by and knew her and asked:

- Have you seen my little dog Zuzu?

- I have not, Lucy! If I find her I will bring her to you - was the answer people would always give her.

Later on, her mother called her to eat but she refused to go. So her mother asked Marcel to eat and then to stay at the gate so that Lucy could also have food.

Lucy had just sat down at the table when Marcel walked in with Zuzu in his arms and showed her to his sister, cheerful:

- Lucy, here’s your Zuzu! She is back and hungry, by the way!

The girl ran to the little dog and hugged her while Zuzu barked and licked her face as she was pleased to see her owner. Then Lucy took her to the porch where her bowls were. She put water and food in them, which Zuzu drank and ate immediately. Then, tired, she fell asleep in Lucy’s lap.

A few months later, they found out that Zuzu was expecting puppies. Lucy's joy was huge and she took care of Zuzu now with even more love. Soon, many beautiful and cute puppies were born, and they were the joy of the house.

Mother's Day was fast approaching and

Lucy was trying to figure out what to give to her mother. Lucy asked her father for help and he took her out to buy a gift for her mother. She returned home very satisfied with a package that she hid away because she did not want to spoil the surprise.

Then, while in the living room with her father, Lucy became quiet and thoughtful. The father was reading the newspaper but kept an eye on his daughter. Then he inquired:

- Darling, what's happening? You are very pensive!

- You know, Daddy, it is just that I need more money - she said.

- I will give it to you, sweetheart. May I ask what do you need it for?

- It's a secret, Daddy.

- Oh, I understand. It's ok. Here's the money. Is this enough? - he asked as he took some money out of his pocket.

- That’ll do, yes! - the girl replied, satisfied.

Hurriedly, she thanked her father, stood up, opened the door and stepped out into the street. Lucy soon returned with a gift package and ran to hide it in her room.

Her father saw her arrive but only smiled; discreet, he did not ask anything.

It was Mother's Day eve. The next day, Lucy woke up very early in the morning to give her gift to her mother. She opened the bedroom door very slowly, walked up to her mother and shouted:

- Happy Mother's Day... - and gave her a tight hug.

- Oh, dear! Thank you! You shouldn’t have. Having you guys is already the greatest gift from God!

Marcel, who had been in the kitchen arranging a tray with a special breakfast for his mom, entered the room proudly, put the tray in his mother's lap and hugged her:

- Congratulations, Mom! I hope you enjoy it! You know how it is. I have never prepared breakfast!

- It's great, honey! Thank you for this beautiful day!

Soon, their mother got up and went to the kitchen. Suddenly, she saw that Lucy passed by with a package heading towards the porch. Curious, she followed her.

The girl came close to her little dog and showing her the bag, said:

- Happy Mother's Day, Zuzu!

And she took what was inside the bag, and moved, her mother saw what it was: a beautiful bone, tied with a red ribbon that Lucy lovingly gave to her Zuzu:

- I hope you like it, Zuzu! I chose the most beautiful bone I found!

Suddenly, Lucy noticed someone behind her and turned around. It was her mother who watched the scene. Then the girl said:

- Mom, Zuzu is now also a Mom, isn’t she?

- Of course, dear! You did very well to bring Zuzu a gift!

Still moved with the gesture and the affection of the little girl, the mother hugged her with love:

- When Our Father in Heaven sent you to our home He wanted to make me happy! You are the most loving daughter anyone could have! Thank you for being my daughter!...
