The Mediums' Book

Allan Kardec

(Part  13)

We continue the methodical study of the Pentateuch Kardec, which focuses on the five major works of the spiritual doctrine, in the order they were first published by Allan Kardec, the Encoder of Spiritualism.

The answers to the questions suggested for discussion was the end of the text below.

Questions

A. The faculty of clairvoyance can be developed?

B. As the hallucinations happen?

C. What is bi-corporeity?

D. Sleep is necessary for the soul appears in other places?

Text for reading

121. Spirits are shown dressed in tunics, wrapped in large cloths, or even with the outfits they wore in life. Involvement in swaddling seems to be the general custom in the world of spirits. (Section 126)

122. Spirits are ethereal matter who want to go through transformations, so they can form objects - clothing, jewelry, snuff boxes, etc. - Wishing, by act of his will and in the same way that they can undo them. (Item 128, question 6)

123. Referring to a spirit who appeared to a woman carrying a box of snuff, the Spirit of St. Louis informed Kardec: a) that the snuff box could become tangible, b) that the lady holding the box, believe be holding a real box, c) that, if opened, would find it in snuff; d) that if this aspiring snuff, this would make her sneeze. (Item 128, questions 7, 8 and 9)

124. The Spirit can give an object not only how, but special properties. If he wanted to make a poisonous substance, could do it, since there was higher permission, such a thing, but it is not allowed. (Item 128, questions 10 and 11)

125. The Spirit can also do a food substance, a fruit, a delicacy anyone if a person to eat, you'll be satisfied. ([1]) (Item 128, question 13)

126. St. Louis, commenting on this phenomenon, says Kardec not have to look far to find it as easy to understand. A ray of sunlight is enough to make perceptible to the eye the material particles which fill the space. The air contains water vapor. Condensed back to normal. Deprived of heat, becomes a solid body, and the same is true with many other chemical substances that can be obtained even more astonishing wonders. The Spirit has, however, the most perfect instruments: the will and permission of God. (Item 128, question 13)

127. The higher the Spirit, he can more easily produce tangible objects. But everything depends on the circumstances, because the inferior spirits also have this power. (Item 128, question 15)

128. Spirit has not always aware of how their clothes and objects are composed. Often he competes for the formation of all these things, practicing an instinctive act, which he does not understand, if not quite enlightened for that. (Item 128, question 16)

129. The spiritist theory about the invisible world of the laboratory can be summarized thus: a) the Spirit works on the matter; b) of the universal cosmic matter takes the elements that need to form objects that have the appearance of various bodies on earth; c) the action of his will, he can operate in an intimate transformation elementary matter, which confers certain properties d) this power is inherent in the nature of the Spirit, which often has so instinctively, without even realizing it, and ) objects so that the Spirit have temporary existence, subject to your will or a need which he experiences; f) it can make them and undo them freely; g) in certain cases, these objects may have in the eyes of people alive, all the appearances of reality, that is, become visible and even tangible h) it is, however, training, not creation, because from nothing the Spirit nothing can take away. (Item 129)

130. The existence of a single elementary matter is now almost generally accepted by science, and the Spirits confirm this existence. All bodies of nature are born of this matter. It is salutary that a substance can become poisonous, the effect of simple changes, the fact that chemistry offers us many examples. Since the Spirit is as large as possible action on the elementary matter, conceives that it be given not just to form substances, but to modify their properties, making it his will to the effect of reactive. (Item 130)

Answers to questions

A. The faculty of clairvoyance can be developed?

Before anything else, you must understand that clairvoyance depends on the organism: it is related to the ability of the fluid of the seer to combine with the fluid of the Spirit. The college may, like all others, develop by exercise, but it is one in which it is better to wait for the natural development of that provoke it, to prevent over excitation of the imagination. (The Mediums' Book, item 100, in questions 26 and 27.)

B. As the hallucinations happen?

The images reach the brain through the eyes leave a mark, which causes us to remember a picture as if we had before us, but this is always a function of memory, because we do not see. In a state of emancipation, the soul sees the brain and then see these images, particularly ones that most impressed, according to the nature of the concerns or the provisions of the Spirit is so there is the mark of religious scenes, evil, dramatic, relating to material life, pictures of bizarre animals, at other times you saw in pictures or even stories because the stories also leave their marks. Thus the soul really sees, but sees only an image recorded in the brain. In the normal state these images are fleeting and ephemeral, but the disease state, with the brain more or less weakened, some images do not fade as in the normal state by outside concerns. Therein lies the true hallucination and the primary cause of fixed ideas. (Ibid., item 113.)

C. What is bi-corporeity?

The Spirit of a living person, isolated from the body, may appear in another place, like a dead person, and have all the appearances of reality and, moreover, it can gain a momentary tangibility. This is the phenomenon called bi-corporeity, which gave rise to the stories of dual men, that is, individuals whose presence was detected simultaneously in two different places. That's what happened with St. Alphonsus Liguori and St. Anthony of Padua, as reported in ecclesiastical history. The phenomenon of bi-corporeity  is a variety of visual manifestations and rests on the properties of the perispirit, which, under given circumstances, can become visible and even tangible. (Ibid., 114 and 119 items.)

D. Sleep is necessary for the soul appears in other places?

The phenomenon can occur without the body falls asleep, however this is very rare, in which case the body is not never been a perfectly normal, but at a more or less ecstatic. The soul then leaves the body, then a part of his perispirit that, thanks to the other part, which remains attached to the body, is the bond of connection between matter and spirit. (Ibid., item 119, paragraphs 1 and 3.)

[1] It should not surprise us, because the report contained in the book of Exodus 16:1-36, about the manna - a tiny thing, like white coriander seed, with similar taste to flour with honey, which fell like ground frost - that the Lord fed the Jewish people for forty years.
