Text for reading

18. Barnabas invites Saul to work in the Church of Antioch - Those who were scattered after the persecution started against the followers of Jesus came to Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch, where he preached the word only to Jews. There was, however, among them some disciples from Cyprus and Cyrene who, preaching at Antioch, were bound also to the faithful of Greek origin, preaching the Good News. The power of the Lord helped them, so much so that it was large number of those who embraced the faith and converted. Barnabas was then sent to Antioch by the Jerusalem church. A considerable number of people added to the Lord and Barnabas went to Tarsus in search of Saul, who was taken by him to Antioch, where they spent working together for one year, instructing the large and growing crowd of disciples. It was in Antioch that the disciples of Jesus were first called "Christians." (Acts, 11:19 to 11:26.)

19. Hunger afflicts Christians from Judea and send out your help - those days, some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch and one of them named Agabus, took the floor and under the Spirit's action, announced that on the whole earth there was a famine, a fact which is evident in the days of Claudius. Jesus' disciples decided to send, then, each according to his ability, aid to the brethren dwelling in Judea. And so they did, sending it to the elders by Barnabas and Saul. (Acts, 11:27 to 11:30.)

20. The escape of Peter, after being arrested by Herod, surprises companions - Once escaped from prison, aided by an angel, Pedro went to the house of Mary, mother of John Mark, where many were gathered together in prayer. He knocked on the door and a maid, called Rose, was to meet him. Recognizing the voice of Peter, she, with joy, nor opened the door, but ran in, announcing that Peter was at the entrance. The others told him, "Are you delirious!" But she insisted that it was true. They then observed: "It must be his angel!" The apostle, however, continued to beat, until he opened the door and saw that it was Peter who was there. When day broke, it was great confusion among the soldiers, because nobody knew what had happened to Peter. Herod seek it, and how they found none, he submitted to questioning the guards and ordered to kill them, then down from Judea to Caesarea, where he stayed. (Acts, 12:12 to 12:19.)

21. Herod's death falls ill and has lightning - With Herod Agrippa I in serious conflict with the inhabitants of Tyre and Sidon, they agreed among themselves to appear before him. They got it for the support of Blasto, a senior official of the king who asked for peace, since the country received its food from the region ruled by the king. On the appointed day Herod, dressed in their robes and seated on the throne, made them a speech. People began to shout, referring to him: "It is the voice of a god, not a man." But suddenly the angel of the Lord smote him, because he had not given glory to God, and Herod Agrippa I died, eaten by worms. Meanwhile, the word of God grew and grew increasingly. Barnabas and Saul, completing his work at Antioch, and returned to Jerusalem, taking with them John Mark, who would later author of the second Gospel. (Acts, 12:20 to 12:25.)

Answers to questions

1. What purpose Saul took the city of Damascus and that there are facts have come close to the city?

Saul went to the high priest and asked him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, so that if he found there the Christian sect followers, both men and women, bring them bound to Jerusalem. Occurs it came near Damascus, suddenly surrounded him a light from heaven, and he, falling on the ground and heard a voice saying to him: Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? He said: Who are you, Lord? He replied: I am Jesus whom you are persecuting. It is hard for thee to kick against goads. He trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me do? Jesus said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do. (Acts 9:1 to 9:9.)

2. Why Ananias helped Saul? And as he acted to restore vision to the persecutor of Christians?

Lord's disciple, Ananias lived in Damascus. Jesus appeared to him in a vision and said, "Ananias! And he answered: Here am I, Lord. Jesus said to him: Arise, and go to the street called Straight, and inquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul of Tarsus, for behold he is praying. Ananias answered: Lord, have heard from many about this man, how much evil he hath done to thy saints at Jerusalem: and here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who invoke your name. I told him, but the Lord: Go, for he is my chosen vessel to bear my name before the Gentiles and kings and the sons of Israel. Then Ananias went and entered the house, and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, you regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit. And immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and his sight, and he arose and was baptized. (Acts, 9:10 to 9:18.)

3. That behavior was Saul after being healed by Ananias?

First, Saul spent some days with the disciples which were at Damascus, where he preached Christ in the synagogues, saying that he really the Son of God. Everyone who heard him were amazed, and said, Is not this what persecuted in Jerusalem those who called this name, and he had come here, to bring them bound unto the chief priests? Saul, struggled more, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, proving that this was Christ. Then, to escape of the Jews who wanted to kill Saul left town and went to Jerusalem, where she tried to join himself to the disciples, but all feared him, not believing that he really had become a disciple. But Barnabas took him, brought him to the apostles and told them how the way he saw the Lord and told him and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus. From there, Saul began to walk with them in Jerusalem, in and out and speaking boldly in the name of the Lord Jesus. (Acts, 9:19 to 9:30.)

4. It is also true that Peter healed the lame and raised the dead?

Yes Here are two cases: Aeneas, who lay in bed for eight years, being paralytic was healed by Peter when he said these words: Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you, rise up and make your bed. Aeneas And he arose immediately. Lived in Joppa a disciple named Tabitha, who died suddenly, soon after this is sick. Led to the location where Tabitha was Peter got to his knees and prayed, and, turning to his body said, Tabitha, arise. She opened her eyes and seeing Peter she sat up. And he gave her his hand, lifted it and calling the saints and widows, presented her alive. (Acts, 9:32 to 9:43.)

5. What was the name he called the centurion Peter to his home in Caesarea, and that something extraordinary happened there?

The centurion Cornelius was called, the Italian cohort. Once, about the ninth hour of the day, he clearly saw a vision an angel of God, it was directed at him and said, 'Cornelius, your prayers and your alms have ascended as a memorial before God. Send now men to Joppa, and call for Simon, whose surname is Peter. This is with one Simon a tanner, which has its home by the sea. He will tell you what to do.

Cornelius, retiring the angel who spoke to him, he called two of his servants and a devout soldier of those who were at his service and sent them to Joppa. Advised on the request of Cornelius, Peter and some friends went to Caesarea, where Cornelius was waiting. As soon as he approached, Cornelius went to meet him, and fell down at his feet and worshiped him. But Peter took him up, saying, Arise, I am a man. Then they asked him why had called him. Cornelius told him what had happened, and in reply he said, Of a truth God is no respecter of persons, but it is nice that that in any nation, fears him and does what is right. The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ who is Lord of all, this word, you know, which was published throughout all Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism which John preached.

In response, Peter explained how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, and talked about the cures and all things that the Master did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. He also spoke about his death on the cross and also about his resurrection and about the things she said after returning from the dead.

Peter was still speaking these words when the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard him. And the faithful who came with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out on the Gentiles also, since they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Then said Peter, Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received us as the Holy Spirit? And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. (Acts 10:1 to 10:48.)
