Text for reading

39. Jesus prays to the Father to protect men in the world - Moments before his arrest, Jesus lifted his eyes to heaven and prayed: "Father, the hour is come, glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee, and thou hast given him power over all flesh, to give eternal life to all who gave to him. And this is eternal life: that you know, thee only, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. " Recalling, in her words, which had glorified the name of the Father and the manifested Your name to the men of the world, Jesus said: "I pray for them: I pray not for the world but for those who have given me, they are yours. And all mine are thine, and thine are mine, and I am glorified. " "Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom thou hast given me, so they are one as us. While I was with them, I kept them in thy name. I have kept those that you gave me, and none of them is lost except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. "(John 17:1 to 17:13.)

40. Jesus said not to belong to this world - In his plea, Jesus did not ask God to draw men in the world, but that free of evil. "It's not the world, as I'm not the world," said the Master. "As you sent me into the world, I also sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth. And do not pray for these alone, but also by those who through their word shall believe in me, that all may be one as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also be in us so that the world may believe that You sent Me. "Finishing his prayer, Jesus prays:" Father, who gave me what I want, wherever I am, they also may be with me, that they may behold my glory which thou hast given me: for thou wilt love before the foundation of the world. Righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I knew you, and these have known that thou hast sent me. And I made known to them thy name, and more will make it known, that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them. " (John 17:14 to 17:26.)

41. Jesus surrenders peacefully to the minions of the high priest - After the Passover, Jesus went with his disciples over the brook Kidron, where was a garden, into which he entered with his disciples. Judas, who knew that place, after receiving the cohort and the officers of the priests and Pharisees, went there with lanterns, torches and weapons. Jesus, aware of how things had happened, came forward and asked, "Whom seek ye?" They said, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus said, "I am". Judas, who betrayed him, stood with them. On hearing the words: "I am", the men drew back and fell to the ground. Jesus again asked, "Whom seek ye?" They said, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus then told them: "I told you that I am, because if ye seek me, let these go" - so to fulfill the word he had said: "Of those who have given me I lost none." (John 18:1 to 18:9.)

42. Heard by the High Priest, the Master is taken to Pilate - Caught first to Annas, father in law of Caiaphas, who was then the high priest asked Jesus that his disciples and his teaching. The Master replied, "I spoke openly to the world I ever taught in the synagogue and the temple where all Jews come together, and said nothing in secret. To ask of me? Ask those who heard what I taught them: behold, they know what I have said. " Upon hearing this response, one of the servants who were there gave a slap in Jesus, saying, answer the high priest? Jesus replied: "If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why did you beat me?" Annas sent him, then him bound to Caiaphas. Simon Peter was near and warmed, when someone asked him if he was one of the disciples of Jesus. Peter denied that he was. Then one of the servants of the high priest, a relative of Malchus, whose ear Peter cut off, said, "Do I see thee in the garden with him?" Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crowed. The Master was taken then to the audience with Pilate, who asked that his accusers brought charges against Jesus. "If this were not a malefactor, not have delivered," answered her supporters of the priest. Pilate said to them: "Take him yourselves and judge him according to your law." They replied: "To us we are not lawful to kill anyone." Pilate then called Jesus, and asked him: "Thou art the King of the Jews?". Jesus replied: "You say this yourself, or told to others of me" (John 18:18 to 18:34.)

43. My kingdom is not of this world, Jesus said to Pilate - Claiming to Pilate that his kingdom was not of this world, because if it were, his servants fight, that he should not be delivered to the Jews, Pilate asked, "So you are king? "And he reiterated:" You say I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice. " The governor of Judea asked him then: "What is truth?" But before Jesus answered him, made the Jews go to tell them: "I find no fault in him. But ye have a custom that I release unto you one at the passover. Would you therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews? "Then they all cried, saying," Not this man, but Barabbas, "which, according to St. John, was a robber. (John 18:36 to 18:40.)

44. Pilate gives in to pressure from priests and delivery Jesus - Pilate scourged Jesus, and the soldiers put him on the head a crown of thorns, dressing him in a purple robe. They said for making fun of him: "Hail, King of the Jews" and gave him blows. Pilate went out again and told the crowd: "Behold, I bring him out, that ye may know that I find no fault in him." Seeing him, but the chief priests and the servants cried, saying, "Crucify him, crucify him." Pilate said to them: "Take him yourselves and crucify him: for I find no fault in him." The Jews explained: "We have a law, and by our law He must die, because he made himself the Son of God." Upon hearing this phrase, Pilate trembled, and went again at the hearing, asked Jesus where he was. Jesus did not answer. Pilate said: "I do not speak to me? Do you not know that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee? "The Master answered him:" You would have no power against me, you is not given up: but he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin. " From that moment Pilate sought a way to release him, but the Jews cried out, saying: "If you release this, you are no friend of Caesar; Everyone who makes himself a king speaks against Caesar." Pilate took then out and Jesus, it was the preparation of the Passover, about noon, said the Jews, "Behold your King." But they cried: "Away, crucify him." "We have no king but Caesar." Pilate then handed it over to be crucified, and the mob took Jesus and led. (John 19:1 to 19:16.)

45. The inscription placed on the cross was written by Pilate - the cross where Jesus was nailed, Pilate put an inscription written by himself: JESUS OF NAZARETH, KING OF THE JEWS, and many of the Jews read this title, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city and the phrase was written in Hebrew, Greek and Latin. The priests protested to Pilate: Write not: King of the Jews, but he said, I am King of the Jews. " Pilate said to them: "What I wrote, I wrote." Once crucified Jesus, the soldiers took his clothes and divided them into four parts, to every soldier a part, minus the tunic, which was without seam, woven out of that top to bottom. They then decided to not tear it, but cast lots to see who she was, in order to be fulfilled the Scripture that says: They divided my garments among themselves, and upon my vesture they cast lots. (John 19:19 to 19:24.)
