Text for reading

11. Herod thinks Jesus is John risen - Herod having heard of the wonders wrought by Jesus, since the Master's name had become public, "the monarch said:" John the Baptist, raised from the dead, and why these powers work in it." Others, however, said: "It is Elijah." And others said: "It is a prophet, or as one of the prophets." Herod, hearing these words, reiterated his thought, saying, "This is John, who beheaded him from the dead." Indeed, although given his death, the king feared John and did, before sending behead him, many things, given him and heard him willingly. (Mark, 6:14 to 6:20.

12. Jesus asks the disciples to eat deem the crowd - Killed on the orders of Herod, the body of John the Baptist was buried by his disciples[1]. Meanwhile, the apostles of Jesus met with him again and told him everything they had done and taught. The Master invited them, then the rest a little, and were alone in a boat to a deserted place. The crowd, however, from seeing them, ran there on foot, coming from all the cities and thus could all approach the Christ who went out and had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd had. And he began to teach them many things. At the end of the day, his disciples came to saying: "The place is desert, and the day is already very advanced. Send them away, to go to places and villages, and buy bread for himself, because they have nothing to eat." But Jesus answered and said unto them, Give ye them to eat. They asked: "Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread to give them to eat" (Mark 6:29 to 6:37.)

13. Jesus walks on the sea and disciples are afraid - After feeding the multitude who heard Jesus obliged his disciples get into the boat and to go to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. Then he went to the mountain to pray. Befallen the afternoon, the boat was at sea and he was alone on the earth. Noting that his companions were toiling in rowing, because the wind was against them, about the fourth watch of the night approached them, walking on the sea. When the disciples saw it, thought that was a ghost, and cried. But Jesus comforted them saying: "Be of good cheer, I'm not afraid." And climbed into the boat, to be with them while the wind ceased. The disciples were amazed and very delighted because they had not understood the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened. Getting the edge in the land of Galilee, to leave the boat, all recognized, and ran all the land around, and began to bring you that were sick, a fact that was repeated wherever Jesus went, in cities, in villages or the countryside. The sick then presented themselves, begging him to let them touch the hem of her dress, and all who touched it healed. (Mark, 6:45 to 6:56.

14. The Master emphasizes attachment to human practices of the Pharisees - Like the Pharisees and all the Jews, observing the tradition of the elders did not eat without washing your hands often, Jesus warned them that by giving such importance to this practice in detriment of spiritual values of life, they reject the commandment of God, to save a purely human tradition. Jesus reminded them: "You leave the commandment of God, you observe the tradition of men." "You know very well - he assured the Master - reject the commandment of God, to keep your own tradition. For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother, and whoever curses his father or his mother will be dead, but you teach: If a man says to his father or his mother: What I could give, is Corban, that is, an offering to God, no longer let him do anything for the father or mother, invalidating the word of God for the tradition which you have given, and do many other such things."(Mark 7:8 to 7:13.)

Answers to questions

1. How was the healing of the woman who was twelve years old, suffered from bleeding??

This woman who, due to a flow of blood, had suffered with many doctors and had spent all that, nothing bettered, but rather grew worse, having heard of Jesus, came from behind, the crowd, and touched his vest. His thinking was: If I may touch but his clothes, heal. This is what happened, it soon dried the fountain of her blood. Then Jesus, knowing that an account of himself was gone, turned to the crowd and said, Who touched my clothes? But the woman who knew what had happened, fearing and trembling, approached and bowed down before him, told him the truth. The Master then said, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole: go in peace and be whole of thy plague. (Mark, 5:25 to 5:34.)

2. Talita Cumi - do these words mean and extraordinary fact that they represent?

Talita Cumi means: Girl, I say unto thee, Arise. Was cured the daughter of Jairus, one of the main synagogue searching Jesus and fell down at his feet, he said: My daughter is dying, I pray that you come and lay hands, to heal and live. When he was yet speaking, there came certain of the main synagogue saying, Your daughter is dead; abhorrest for the Teacher? At these words, Jesus said to Jairus, Fear not, only believe. And went to his house, accompanied by brothers Peter and John and James. On entering the house, the master replied, 'Why make ye this ado and weep? The girl is not dead, but sleeping. People laughed at him, yet he, having put all forth, taketh the father and mother of the girl, and those who were with him, and entered where the girl was lying and took the hand of the young girl, told him : Talita Cumi. The girl, who had at that time twelve years old, got up and returned to walking, and everyone was astonished with the fact. (Mark, 5:22 to 5:24, 5:35 to 5:43.)

3. Why Jesus could not do mighty works in Nazareth?

Nobody is a prophet in his land, that is the phrase spoken by Jesus, that explains why the city that saw him grow could do healings and miracles that he had done elsewhere. The fact is that, knowing he was a simple carpenter, the son of Mary, did not believe he was the Messiah, and therefore, due to disbelief that people could not do mighty work there, having cured only by a few sick the imposition of hands. (Mark 6:1 to 6:6.)

4. That mission was given by Jesus to his twelve disciples? And they work because of this, they began to perform?

He called him the twelve, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them power over unclean spirits. Leaving the disciples began to preach pleading with their listeners to repent. In this task, the disciples cast out evil spirits and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them. (Mark 6:7 to 6:13.)

5. What was the real reason for the arrest of John the Baptist and his death?

The arrest of John the Baptist was decreed by Herod because of Herodias, wife of Philip his brother, as John said to Herod: It is not lawful to possess the wife of your brother. Herodias was watching and wanted to kill him, but could not, for Herod feared John, knowing it was a just man and holy, and observed with certainty, given him, and willingly listened. Getting a favorable occasion when Herod on his birthday, gave a supper to his large, the tribunes and the princes of Galilee, the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, which greatly pleased Herod and them that were with him at the table . And the king said to the girl, "Ask me whatever you want, and I will give it thee. And swore to him, saying: Whatever you ask me I will give up half of my kingdom. The girl asked her mother, What shall I ask? She said: The head of John the Baptist. Herod was exceedingly sorry to hear such a request, but because of the oath and those who were with him at the table, did what she had been asked. (Mark, 6:17 to 6:28.)

[1] According to Flavius Josephus, John the Baptist was killed in the fortress of Machaerus.
