A lesson from the mirror

Arun was a little boy who would always feel irritated. He had no patience at all.

He would always complain about everything: lunch was not ready at the right time, the bus queue was too long, and he had too many things to do...

He was always in a bad mood. One day his mother said to him:

— Have you ever looked at your face in the mirror when you are angry?

Arun was replied, feeling irritated:

— No. Why is that?

— When you feel angry, please look at your face in the mirror. I think you will have a surprise, my son. — His mother kindly said to her son with a smile on her face.

One morning Arun woke up feeling really angry. He then remembered his mother’s advice and looked at his face in the mirror. He didn’t look into the mirror everyday, but decided to spend some time doing this test.

He got quite frightened. He looked quite angry, his mouth was contracted and his eyes were red. It didn’t look like him!

That’s horrible! He looked really ugly! His mother was right! He then told his mother what happened over breakfast. She then said to him:

— Can you see my son the meaning of our thoughts?

— Thoughts? — He asked feeling quite confused.

— Yes, son. You have a pretty looking face. The issue is that at that time your face was reflecting your thoughts, as a mirror reflects your image.

She then asked her son to come close to the mirror with her and said:

— Think of something pleasant or something you like a lot.

Arun, thought for a while... and then said:

— Maybe think of someone you like very much? Oh! I know. Think of the little dog you sat the other day and dad promised would give you. He is so cute!

She then placed Arun right in front of the mirror. He looked like a different person: serene, calm, happily and with shinning eyes. Ever since that day, every time Arun felt irritated or lost patience for something silly he recalled the lesson from the mirror. He then tried to calm down and control himself.

It wasn’t easy in the beginning. He found it quite challenging.  As  the days  went by, he started to

see some results which made him feel much better about himself.

Arun was a completely different person after a few weeks. He was much more flexible, easy-going, approachable and talkative. He treated everyone with kindness and respect. He would always have a smile on his face.

Whenever someone close to him would loose their patience or feel angry for no reason he would warn them:

— be careful! Remember the lesson from the mirror!
