Text for reading

71. At the last Passover supper Jesus warns that one of them will betray - the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying: "Where do you want us to prepare to eat the passover?" He replied: "Go to city, a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is near, at your house to celebrate Passover with my disciples. " The disciples did as Jesus commanded them and they prepared the passover. Arrival in the afternoon, the master sat at the table with the twelve. It was then, while they were eating, Jesus said to them: "Verily I say that one of you will betray me." (Matthew 26:17 to 26:21.)

72. Jesus warns that, after rising, will find them in Galilee - After confirming that Judas was the traitor, Jesus took bread, blessed it, broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take, eat, this is my body ". Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave unto them, saying, "Drink from it all, because this is my blood, the blood of the New Testament which is shed for many for the remission of sins. And I tell you that from now, will not drink of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom. " After supper, sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives. Then Jesus said to them: "All of you tonight you offended at me for it is written I will smite the shepherd and the sheep will scatter. But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee. " Peter, advancing to the others, said: "Although all shall be offended in thee, I never be offended." But Jesus warned: "Verily I say unto thee, this night, before the cock crows, you will deny me three times." (Matthew 26:25 to 26:34.)

73. Jesus prays three times before being arrested - Jesus was a place called Gethsemane, where, leaving there his disciples, he departed from the site, rather than to pray. He just went with Peter and the sons of Zebedee. The Master was very sad and scared and was in these circumstances, praying, said: "My Father, if possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt." After the prayer, he realized that the three disciples were asleep, which gave rise to the familiar warning, "Watch and pray so that not into temptation, indeed the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak." That said, he prayed a second time, saying, "My Father, if this cup may not pass from me except I drink, let it be your will". Soon, after praying for the third time, repeating the same words, Jesus told his disciples: "Sleep now and take your rest: behold, now is the time, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners." (Matthew 26:36 to 26:45.)

74. Jesus warns those who kill by the sword, die by the sword - which was soon arrested by a crowd from the chief priests and elders of the people, one of which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, drew his sword, and struck the servant of high priest, cut off his ear. Jesus rebuked him, saying: "Put in place your sword, because all they that take up the sword, die by the sword. Or do you think you I can not now pray to my Father, and he did not give me more than twelve legions of angels? How then shall the Scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be? "That said, the Lord addressed the crowd:" Are ye come out as against a thief with swords and clubs to arrest me? Every day I sat next to you, teaching in the temple, and ye took me not. " And he added, explaining the alleged inconsistency of them: "But all this took place to fulfill the scriptures of the prophets." (Matthew 26:50 to 26:56.)

75. At the house of Caiaphas decides that Jesus is worthy of death - While all the disciples fled, Jesus was led into the house of high priest Caiaphas, where the scribes and elders were assembled. Peter followed him afar off unto the high priest's palace, going to sit among the servants. The chief priests and the elders and all the advice they needed someone who could testify against Jesus, but could not, until finally arrived two witnesses, who said, pointing to the Master: "That said, I can destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days. " Caiaphas asked him: "Do not answer anything to which these witness against thee?" Jesus did not answer. Caiaphas insisted, saying: "I charge thee by the living God that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God." Jesus replied: "Thou hast said I tell you, however, that soon you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of power, and coming on the clouds of heaven." Caiaphas was enough to rip his clothes and say, "blasphemed, what further need have we of witnesses? Behold now ye have heard his blasphemy. What do you think? "The other replied:" He is guilty of death. " Then they spit in his face and gave her fists, and slapped, challenging him, "Prophesy to us, Christ, who's hit you" (Matthew 26:56 to 26:68.)

76. Judas repents, returns the coins and kill yourself - Decided by the council formed by the priests and elders of the people that Jesus should be killed and bound him and took him to Pontius Pilate. Judas, who betrayed him, seeing that he was condemned, repented brought the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders. As no one paid attention, he shot to the temple silver coins, withdrew from there and was hanged. Collecting coins, the priests said: "It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, because they are blood money." Then decided, on advice, buy with them the potter's field, to serve as a tomb for foreigners. Knowing what was its origin, the Jews of that place called Field of Blood, fulfilling this way what was predicted by Jeremiah. In the presence of Pilate, the provincial president, he asked Jesus, "Art thou the King of the Jews?" Jesus answered, "Thou sayest." Accused by the chief priests and elders, he did not, however, defend themselves. Pilate asked, "Do you hear how many things they witness against thee?" But Jesus did not say any word, which meant that Pilate marveled. (Matthew 27:1 to 27:14.)

Judas received thirty pieces of silver to betray Jesus. It was the chief of the priests who rewarded. (Matthew 26:14 to 26:16 and 26:47 to 26:50.)

2. Jesus knew that Judas would betray him?

Yes, where supper, he told those who were at the table: What puts me in the dish, that will betray me. Judas said, Is it I, Rabbi? He said: Thou hast said. (Matthew 26:19 to 26:25.)

3. Before being handed over by Judas, Jesus withdrew to a solitary place to pray. What place was this? Disciples who accompanied him this time? How many times Jesus prayed there?

The place was called Gethsemane. The disciples who followed him were Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, James and John. There, until the time of his arrest, Jesus prayed three times. (Matthew 26:36 to 26:46.)

Peter followed him afar off unto the high priest's palace, and entering, sat with the servants, to see what would happen. As to the other, there is no news of what they did. (Matthew 26:51 to 26:56.)

5. It is true that Peter denied Jesus three times?

Yes The first time Peter sat outside in the courtyard, when a servant approached him. She said: You also were with Jesus the Galilean. Peter said: I do not know what to say. The second time he went out into the hall where another girl saw him and told those who were there, This man was with Jesus of Nazareth. Peter reaffirmed: I do not know the man. Shortly thereafter, approaching those that stood by said to Peter, Surely thou also them, because your speech betrays you. He then began to curse and swear, saying, I do not know this man. At that moment the cock crowed. Peter remembered then the words of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. Leaving there, he then wept bitterly. (Matthew 26:33 to 26:35, and 26:69 and 26:70.)
