A dream that hasn’t been accomplished

Once upon a time, a girl called Claire was going to school with her mother. She was feeling unhappy and irritated.

Why did she have to go to school? What was the point? Her dad never studied and was able to have a decent life. He worked in the construction field and always managed to build beautiful houses.

This is so unfair! — She thought. I feel I am obliged to go to school everyday!

They passed by a farm where she saw a chicken walking around in the fields. She then said to her mother:

— This chicken looks so happy, mom. She doesn’t have to study or go to school. She doesn’t need to do anything.

— How come? — Her mother said. — This chicken works laying eggs which will feed this family.

After a short while the girl saw a cow eating grass next to her cub. She then looked at both creatures and complained to her mother:

— This cow doesn’t need to work or go to school, mum. She must be so happy!

— This cow helps us by providing milk to children, my daughter.

They then passed by a beautiful garden where the girl saw a bee flying around. This bee then stopped over a flower.

— This tiny bee doesn’t have to do anything. It flies around all the time having fun. This is what I’d like to do!

Her mom, very patiently, said:

— You are wrong, Claire. These bees are working in the fields flying and doing their task. The bees obtain the nectar from flowers. They will then produce a very sweet and useful honey. This honey is very good for our health.

Claire felt disappointed.

— You are saying that everyone works?

— That’s right my daughter. Every living being collaborates with nature doing its own tasks.

She then reacted, irritated:

— No one needs to go to school. My dad never studied and still earns money by working in the construction field.

The mother looked at her seriously but with kindness:

— Oh, Claire! You have no idea how much your dad regrets not studying. When he was a child, he lived in a farm where there were no schools around. The family later on decided to move to the city but your granddad was not able to afford to pay for your dad to go to school. Your father always dreamed of becoming an engineer, but he was never able to. Today he builds houses, but this is not what he really wanted to do. He actually wanted to plan constructions, by turning into reality the ideas he has in paper. Nowadays all he can do is obey to the orders he receives at work. He never complains about it. He never felt unhappy with God either since he is able to maintain our family. Therefore, if he could choose he would have studied.

Clare stopped talking for a while and thought about what her mother said. They arrived at school in the meantime. She then said good-bye to her mother and said:

— Right, mom. I will never complain anymore. I now understand that everyone needs to do something. I also need to do my tasks. I will study now to have a better future.

Mother and daughter hugged for a while and Claire went off to school, smiling.
