The Hermit

There has been a very kind man, who had a strong faith in God. One day he decided to leave everything behind and go to a place to meditate about the purpose of his life. He wanted to be a God’s servant, but did not know how.

He was so keen on obtaining the answers for his questions that despite his wife and children appealing, he decided to abandon his house and family.

Walking aimlessly, his steps led him to a mountain. He then decided to climb it because he believed that it would take him closer to God.

He has found a cave where he could protect himself from the wind, cold, rain and wild animals. He spent days praying, but he did not get any answers.

He observed the landscape that unfolded before his eyes, the beauty of creation, where everything worked in perfect order. He thought that Nature would hold the answer to his questions.

He approached a crystal water source and said:

- My water source friend, you are happy. You have found the purpose of your existence, running between the rocks, without stopping, and helping all those who seek to quench their thirst.

A bit far away he noticed a large tree and

he has rested on its shadow. He understood that the tree was also serving the purpose of its creation.

With affection, he has embraced the powerful trunk and said:

- My tree friend, you are happy. You have understood the purpose of your life; you provide fruits, shadow and shelter to the birds.

Looking at the ground, he has analyzed the work done by little ants, which were making a big effort to carry food back to their nest.

He got down on his knees and whispered:

— You too my friends, you also do your work.

Observing everything around him, the hermit thought:

- Everything has a purpose in life and everyone acts according to their conditions. How about me Lord? What should I do? Show me the way!

One day, the good man was concentrated on his prayers when he heard a groan. He ran quickly into the jungle in order to find out where the groan came from.

He found a poor man that was badly injured, after falling from a cliff. The main was unable to move and was having delusions.

The hermit went down the cliff and despite all difficulties he managed to take the man out of there. The man was badly injured and apparently was lying there for days, with no help.

Filled with compassion, the hermit carried the poor man to his cave. He gave him water and checked the state of this leg, which was bleeding profusely. He gathered   some    herbs   and   made   a

dressing to his leg. He also prepared a tea, based on medicinal plants, to reduce his pain.

In a few days the man was almost recovered. He was eating and chatting to the hermit, who he considered his saviour.

- I cannot thank you enough. God sent you. Without your help I certainly would have died. You saved my life – said the man, thrilled.

When he heard these words, the hermit immediately thought about his family, and considered:

- What if it were my children who were injured, in need of help?

At that moment the hermit understood that his purpose in life was to help people in need by using his knowledge and capabilities. God did not want him to be isolated, in constant prayer, but to help people in need and his own family, who were abandoned by him.

The hermit has returned to this home and reassumed his responsibilities. He was very happy and satisfied to help people in need.
