Ray of Light

Once upon a time, a generous hearted young man was feeling confused. He didn’t know how to act in certain circumstances.

His friends had attitudes that didn’t seem correct. Therefore, he recognised some valuable qualities on them.

There were women living close to his home that people would say did not have a respect life. Therefore, when he was sick and needed help, these women helped him with dedication and devotion. They brought him food, medication and looked after him until he was healthy.

There was a man people would say was a very bad bandit who committed several crimes. They even said the police was searched for him. Therefore, the young man go to know this person at market, and realised he was a very sad man who suffered a lot in life.

He then met a wise man and asked him:

— Please tell me, sir, how should we proceed in regards to people who lead a disrespectful life? Society says we should get away and be indifferent to them. People also say we should avoid them so that we do not copy their behaviour. What do you think about that?

The ancient man thought for a few seconds and then asked:

— My young boy, have you observed the swamp? Have you seen it’s covered  by  dirty  shallow  bodies of

water?

— Yes! The mud obliges us to get away so we don’t get contaminated with the dirty in the swamp.

The ancient stopped talking for a while but then continued:

— My boy, in the same swamp where dirty is located, a ray of light comes from the sky towards the darkness. It touches the mud without getting contaminated. It then helps the mud, but gets away from it still pure and enlighten.

The young man smiled. He understood the lesson. He now knows dirty is located in the one that carries it around. We can get closer to people and help them without getting involved with their negative attitudes.

The wise ancient man then said:

— Wasn’t this what Jesus used to do in regards to those who wanted his help? He thought them to do the same. Jesus considered their favourites to be prostitutes, sick, begers and all who were retaliated by society. He said it is not those who are healthy that need a doctor, but those who are sick.

The young man then gave a deep breath. He felt happy and revigorated. That was the answer he needed to hear. He stood up, thanked the ancient man and left. He was convinced he was acting correctly.

From this day onwards, he dedicated himself with more care to the ones who are in need. He tried to do everything he could that was at his reach. (Message from Léon Tolstoi, psychographed by Célia Xavier Camargo on the 30th July 2009.)
