Francisco Aranda Gabilan:

“Talking about the Doctrine involved an immense level
of responsibility”

It is important to act with good-will in all relationships.
We shall not practice any act against the spiritist
principles based on Jesus moral

Francisco Gabilan (picture) was born in the capital of São Paulo and lives at Santana de Parnaíba, São Paulo, Brazil. He has been spiritist since birth. He is lawyer and was linked to the Spiritist Federation of São Paulo for 32 years. He is now the vice-President of Casa Jesus, Amor e Caridade. He is a much requested speaker and author of many books. Here he brings us his life experience to the readers, in a very enriching interview.

O Consolador: How many books have you got published?

I have published 4 books: “Entre o Pecado e a Evolução” (Between Sin and Evolution), “Macho, Fêmea Etc...” (Male, Female, etc...), “Curso Para Expositores na Sociedade Espírita” (co-authored the book Course for Spiritist Speakers) e “É Possível Prever o Futuro? A Doutrina Espírita Responde” (Is it possible to prevent the Future? The Spiritist Doctrine responds). I am also writing another on talking about sexuality disequilibrium (title to be defined).

O Consolador: When did you become spiritist?

I have been coming to the spiritist centre since my childhood. The first time I remember going to Vila Esperança, Penha, where my mom was working as a medium. Soon later I remember talking to hundreds of patients treated in our house since my mom was able to cure, assisted by a spiritual medical team. At the end of my teenage years, I started to go to the Spiritist Federation of São Paulo. I went there for many, many years.

O Consolador: What does the experience of writing and talking in the name of Spiritism brings to your life?

It brought a more ethical view of human relationships. Through Spiritism, I was able to bring up children with the same moral values, and be conscious of my responsibility to help those in need. The knowledge of the Spiritist Doctrine involves an enormous responsibility but it comforts and changes us all.

O Consolador: Your recent book talks about the future and is based on the The Genesis. Can you please tell us more about it?

Actually, this theory is an important chapter of the book The Genesis, from Allan Kardec. It talks about the scientific aspects of the Doctrine and was published 11 years after The Spirit’s Book. The Genesis came to light when a solid scientific base involving Spiritism was already available. I have given so many lectures and organised so many courses about The Genesis I began writing texts about it. Some of them were about the Fluid Theory, Proof of the Existence of God, etc. What we call ‘the future’ is nothing more than the present we are not aware of, but it does exist. It is a concrete fact analysed through logic and ration.

O Consolador: You will publish a book about sexuality soon. What does it talk about?

This book has been conceived through 20 years of lecturers, debates and seminars on sexuality and its disturbances. I have tried to write against a common mistake a lot of people have, including spiritists. A lot of people think any behaviour outside ‘normal standards’ is accepted as homosexual. We have collected precise data on the last years, which have allowed us to classify these disturbances under several groups. The smallest group has been homosexual, effectively. I have also encouraged everyone on the book to respect sexual preferences, since we are all immortal beings and are working towards constant evolution and change.

O Consolador: How challengeable is to conceal your profession with the spiritist knowledge?

This part of life is quite complicated but I have managed to conceal both jobs. Today I am able pass on my experience to the younger generation, my students and both my daughters: on my professional life, there is no room for dodgy deals or lies. I always inform my clients the need to act with good-will and avoid any act that will go against my consciousness. I had the opportunity to get my hands into large sums of money, but it would imply going against my moral values which is why I denied it. I have decided all my life to follow the spiritist principles based on Jesus moral which have always called my reasoning and did not allow me to yield. Even though I denied these getting my hands into these large sums of money, I have always been able to work honestly and have enough resources to live.

O Consolador: What are the most remarkable experiences you had within Spiritism?

There were four experiences I would highlight. Firstly, was when I was younger I saw ectoplasmic phenomena during a mediumship session. It is commonly called materialization, when four materialized spirits appeared during the session for everyone’s surprise and excitement. Secondly, I graduated 9 students on my first Speech Training course 20 years ago. There were 50 students signed up for it, and was I was responsible for more lecturers of the Spiritist Doctrine who are still giving speeches nowadays. I cried of happiness on that day. Thirdly, I gave a speech about sexuality disturbances which was called ‘Sex and Reincarnation”, in São Lourenço (MG). I focused on the concept and behaviour of creatures that are wrongly labelled as immoral. At the end of the lecture, a couple came to talk to me who was followed by two young men. One of them was their son; the other was his inseparable friend. His parents said:

“Today through your ideas we are able to understand our son and his friend. We decided to give our son and his friend all support and love they need since they are spirits who are linked to one another and it is not down to us to judge them, but to support them. ”. We all cry after this statement!

Fourthly, last year I took part on creation of the Spiritist-Law Association of São Paulo. I was elected Council Coordinator for this entity which is growing strength to strength.  It aims to preach a more ethical posture for lawyers, judges, Justice Attorneys, delegates, and any law representatives.

O Consolador: What is your opinion on polemic topics that have been getting society’s and the spiritist movement’s attention?

Spiritism, as Kardec’s teachings have told us, follows the human beings evolution. That is why it does not omit information and talks about all topics that are challenging our society nowadays. In a not so distant past, some of these issues were not spoken about in a logical and rational way. The spiritist speakers today, inspired by spirits of high moral and intellectual standards discourse easily on areas such as Euthanasia, Abortion, Drugs, Sex and its disturbances, Donation of Organs and Transplants, Violence amongst humans and against animals. We also discuss about Ecology, the Corruption of values, Politics and Ethics. We look for the causes and analyse the effects, focusing on solutions that will enable us all to follow the right path.

O Consolador: What aspect of the Spiritist Doctrine captivates you the most: feeling or reasoning?

Logic and reasoning are linked to all aspects of the Doctrine: Philosophy, Scientific and Religion.

O Consolador: Is there anything else you would like to add?

I would appreciate Spiritists continue to work on consoling and curing invalids, the ones in need, incarnated and disincarnated. Therefore, we should never stop studying and get deeper into the Doctrine as codified by Allan Kardec. The Spiritual World has developed it for the benefit of human progress. Let’s follow two instructions received from the Spirit of Truth: "Spiritists! Love one another … and educate yourselves.” Let our Creator help all creatures to get into the light, today and always.
