Learning to become
a mother

Vicky was a well-behaved, intelligent and creative child. She loved messing around and did not accept when others tried to get on her way. Her mom was very worried about her safety and well-being, and said:

— Vicky, don’t play with matches. You will get burned.

She would then say:

— I won’t get burned, mommy. I am 6 years old, and I know how to look after myself!

Her mom found it funny. She would hug her daughter with love, and hide the box of

matches. She placed them where she would not be able to reach them.

The same always happened. Vicky played with her friends, and her mom would need to watch over them. Sometimes the girl would get a knife to play with, as if she was making food, and her mom would need to stay on top of her. She didn’t let her mother rest for a second. Vicky would always complain saying:

— Mom! I know what I am doing. I am a big girl now!

— My daughter, you still have a lot to lear. When you were born in our home, God made me responsible for your life. My task is to look after you, protect you, so that nothing bad happens to you. I also need to protect all your friends who come over to our house. Do you understand?

— Yes, I do mom.

— Great. When you grow up and have children, you will understand me better. Now, go out and play!

Therefore, everything keep happening on the same way. One day, Vicky went shopping with her mother. On their way back, a dog followed them. It was white and brown coloured. It seemed to be abandomned.

Vitcky loved him. It was so little and fragile, and she loved dogs.

— Mom, can we take him home?

— No, Vicky. He has got an owner already.

— It was abandoned, mom. I am sure. Please can we take

him?

The mother would refuse to agree with her, but she insisted on asking. The owner of a bakery, close to where they were standing, decided to interfere:

— Sorry to disturb, madam, but the dog is abandomned. I usually give him some milk everyday.

Vicky then said:

— See, mom? I told you! Please! He needs a home!

Her mom ended up agreeing with her.

— Fine, but only with one condition. You will need to be responsible for it: food, water, bath, and clean after it.

Vicky agreed and said:

— Come on, Roch. I will be your mom and look after you.

Vicky would only think about the dog, from that day onwards. She would treat him with love and care for him. Roch was everywhere she would go to. When she went to school it wanted to go with her. When she came back, the first thing she would do would be hug Roch. She would also worry about it:

— Roch, don’t go there! Don’t eat rubbish! Be careful on the street. The car will catch you!

When the day was over, she felt tired but happy at the same time. Close to mother’s day, daugher and mother were sitting at the garden. They saw Roch running, and barking after a buterfly. Vicky looked at her mom and said:

— Mom! You said I would only understand you when I grew up and had a son. I don’t think I need to grow up for this. Roch is like my son, and I worry about him all the time!

Her mom smiled at her daughter’s attitude. Vicky smiled back and they hugged each other:

— HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY, mom! I haven’t bought your present yet.

Her mother smiled. She understood God has his ways and gives every individual their opportunity to learn and mature. Her daughter was growing up with the experience and becoming a better person.

— You don’t need to buy me anything, my dear. You already gave me the biggest present I ever wished for: You!
