The sad little clown

Guillermo was boy who would do very well at school and passed the year with success. His parents provided him with a few days holidays in the beach.

Guillermo was really happy! He packed his suitcase and together with his parents and little brother, went travelling on a beautiful sunny day. When the got to the entrance of the city, they saw a circus: a live stage show. It had colourful lights, wild animals in different cages, elegant horses and funny looking monkeys.

Guillermo felt really emotional when he saw the circus, and heard his father promise him to go and watch the performance. On the next day, at the arranged time, they went there. Ballerinas, equilibrists, magicians, trapeze artists were around clowns, monkeys, elephants, and many other animals. Guillermo had a package of popcorn in hands, laughed and clapped hands at the show. He was really

happy to be there.

Suddenly, he looked at one of the clowns who were doing pirouettes at the circus ring. Even though he was smiling, his eyes seemed so sad. When he approached Guillermo, he saw two tears in his painted face. From that moment onwards, nothing seemed funny anymore. He couldn’t stop thinking about the clown.

On the next morning he woke up, went to the beach and came back to the circus. It seemed so different to Guillermo. It didn’t have the beautiful colourful lights or looked luxurious to him anymore. Some people were cleaning the place while others were treating the animals.

The boy asked where he could find the sad little clown and was told he was at the circus ring. When he went to the ring, Guillermo seemed to heat all hand clapping and laughs coming from the audience. Soon he was able to see him sitting on the floor, with his hands in between your hands.

— Hello! —Guillermo saluted him.

The clown lifted his head when he heard the boy.

— Hello! What brings you here, boy?

— Well, I wanted to have a look at a clown from a closer distance.

— Oh! I am sure you will feel disappointed. I am just a man like any other.

Guillermo sat next to him and said:

— That’s weird! I always thought clowns smiled and made jokes all the time, as if life is just a big party — the boy told him.

— That’s not true, my son. Sometimes we laugh to avoid crying…

— I understand. I noticed you were really said yesterday, during the show. What happened?

— Really?!... Was it noticeble? The truth is I am having personal problems.

The clown then told him his story. His daughter was sick and he didn’t have money to take her to the doctor. Guillermo smiled and assured him:

— Oh, please don’t worry! My dad is a doctor and he can have a look at her.

He ran away and came back an hour later with his dad. The clown took them to where his daughter was staying. Both dad and son were very impressed with the state of the place. The car they travelled was their home, but it was very poor and without any comfort.

The doctor examined the child and said to her father she has pneumonia. Besides, she was underfed; she needed to be better looked after.

— I know, doctor. — said the clown — but I have no money. I don’t earn enough. Everything I earn is barely enough to cover our most urgent expenses.

— Don’t worry. Your daughter needs to be hospitalized, but she will be good very soon, with the help of God.

The doctor took the child to the hospital, where she would soon be medicated. Right away, he also gave the clown lots of food and an envelope with a substantial amount of money. He poor man was very surprised and said:

— But, doctor, I don’t know how I can repay you!

— Don’t worry. I just want you to make children smile.

A few days later, the child was back at home, healthy and happy. It was the last show of the circus. They would leave on the next day. Guillermo and his family were all there, at the first line. The clown came closer to them with a beautiful red balloon tied to a string. He came closer to Guillermo and gave

him the balloon, with a smile on his face.

— You are no longer a said little clown — the boy said.

— No. Thanks to you, I can smile once again. I don’t know how to thank you for what you have done for me.

The doctor, who was good-humoured, said:

— That’s easy. Please prepare a beautiful and happy show to cheer all children up.

The clown looked grateful and went away turning somersaults and doing different tricks. Guillermo sighed, satisfied. The father looked at his son with kindness:

— Most of the times, pain and suffering are where we least expect it, my son. We need to have sensitivity to find where the needs of people are. If it wasn’t for you, no one would have found out what was wrong with the clown. Well done, Guillermo, Jesus is for sure very happy with you.

He then hugged his son with tenderness, and said:

— The truth is that wherever we are we can help someone. We only need good will and love in our hearts.
