Alexandre Tomboly Junior:

“Our work is focused on providing assistance to and evangelising low income families”

Our fellow Spiritist worker from Brazil’s São Paulo state talks about the beautiful work carried out at the Spiritist Centre Alvorada Nova, founded 15 years ago in the seaside city of São Vicente

Alexandre Tomboly Junior (photo) is the president of the Christian Spiritist Home Alvorada Nova (New Dawn), which he found with his wife, Célia Tomboly, and some friends. He got involved in Spiritism in 1988 and has never looked back. The Spiritist Centre he founded has an important programme of assistance to children and family in

deprived areas of São Vicente.

Tell us a bit more about the beginning of the Spiritist Centre and your main priorities.

The Centre was founded on January 10th 1997. Even though it provides the services usually associated with Spiritist Centres (healing, study groups etc.) it is focused really on providing assistance to low income families in the region and giving them access to the Gospel of Christ. We provide support in many areas, inclusive advice on drug addiction.

Where is the Spiritist Centre located and how did you get the resources to buy the land and for the construction of what is really a comfortable and spacious building?

We received donations, we raised money through the sale of CDs, we had fund-raising events and my pension goes entirely to fund all the work needed. Our facilities comprise 1,000sq metres of built in area, including 10 rooms for studies of the Gospel, a canteen, video rooms, lecture room for 500 people, two kitchens and other rooms, including admin offices. We also have two rooms for people to sleep if they need, a living room and a sewing workshop.

How many children to you help on a daily basis? What activities do you provide to them?

Two hundred children attend our evangelisation classes. We also help them with the school homework, with extra classes to help at school, we provide school books and uniforms.

And what work do you do with their families?

We donate food, we give them advice on family life and help them set up their weekly Gospel in the Home routine.

Nova Alvorada is based in a very deprived area. What are the main challenges that stem from that?

In a deprived area as such, you have the lack of basic infrastructure, you also have a great number of single mothers, abandoned by the father of their children. But the worst problem we face is drug addiction, which is everywhere in the area, a real plague.

What experience would you like to highlight from all these years working in the area?

Whole families have been rescued. And there were also individuals who were considered lost cases and have also been recovered for society.

When you look at the nice building you have there, in contrast with all the poverty around it, you cannot help to compare this to one of the advanced outposts of the Spiritual World mentioned in so many Spiritist books. What is your view on that?

Our benefactors have always advised to build something that would lift the spirits of those who come in, making them feel like coming back again and again. When they walk through our door they get straight away an “energetic bath”, which makes them feel better and works as healing.

What is the contact for those who want to help your group with donations?

Please phone us on the numbers on our website, www.alvoradanova.org.com.br. We would welcome and put up anyone who wants to come in person to our Spiritist Home. (1)

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Yes, I would like to say how grateful we are to God and to all the generous Spiritual Benefactors who guide us, enabling us through the volunteer work in such a blessed organisation to pay back some of the debts we contracted in our past lives. Thank you very much!
