Oceano Vieira de Melo:

“90% of our DVDs are sold through non-spiritists bookshops and sites”

Spiritist Movies and documentaries are now available on DVD, which is a great tool for the dissemination of Spiritism. It even goes beyond the spiritist movement

Oceano Vieira de Melo (picture), 58 years old, originally from Alagoas but now lives in São Paulo, Brazil. He is a self-taught person who has been working for a living since he was 8 years of age. He reads the daily newspaper The State of São Paulo, the books from the Spiritist Codification and also others such as Conduta Espírita (translated to Spiritist Conduct) and Agenda Cristã (translated to Christian Agenda)

He has been working professionally as a DVD producer. Some of topics published are:   Arts,   biographies,   Cultural   and

Humanism. He said he felt a need for spiritists’ documentaries and movies to be launched, which lead him to start up with Versátil Vídeo Spirite. He considers himself a Spiritist since he watched the program Pinga-Fogo com Chico Xavier. This programme happened on the 28th July and 21st December 1971 on TV Tupi. It contributed positively for the expansion of the Spiritist movement in Brazil as the first programme was supposed to last for 60 minutes but went on for 3hours.

Please read through the following interview for more details.

O Consolador: How and when did Versátil Digital Filmes and Versátil Vídeo Spirite came live? What is the difference between them?

Versátil Digital Filmes is company that produces films and DVDs. It was founded in 1999 being then named Versátil Home Vídeo. It was supposed to produce in DVDs Brazilian, European movies, Biographies and Art movies. Vídeo Spirite was created in 2004 to pay homage to Allan Kardec. Vídeo Spirite means, in Latin, "I see spirit". Please correct me if I am wrong.

O Consolador: How many spiritist titles have been launched?

a) YESTERDAY’S CHILDREN - A woman thinks her dreams are recalling a past life as an Irish mother with four children, and later sets out for Ireland to discover the truth. It is a non spiritist movie that proves life after death and reincarnation; two pillars of Spiritism.

b) PINGA-FOGO COM CHICO XAVIER – Historical documentary;

c) GIORDANO BRUNO -  Biographical movie;

d) PESTALOZZI FOREVER - Biographical movie;

e) CHICO XAVIER INEDITO-DE PEDRO LEOPOLDO E UBERABA - Historical documentary;

f) LIFE AFTER DEATH - Historical documentary which proves 30 years later the work of the spirit André Luiz; written through the pen of the medium Francisco Cândido Xavier in the 40s and 50s.

g) INICIATION TO SPIRITISM- Complete course on Spiritism with 34 lectures given by Therezinha Oliveira;

h) THE PROCESS OF JOAN OF ARC - Biographical movie;

o) SPIRITISM - FROM KARDEC TO PRESENT DAYS - Biographical movie;

p) ALLAN KARDEC, THE EDUCATOR - Biographical movie;

q) COLLECTION CALLED THIS IS SPIRITISM – Box Collection with 5 movies;

r) THE GIFT OF MEDIUMSHIP – WITH DR. MARLENE NOBRE – Special Lecture;

s) BIRTH BICENTENARY OF ALLAN KARDEC – Homage to Allan Kardec which took place in 2004, during celebration of his 200 years of his birth, in Paris;

t) COMPOSERS FROM BEYOND – Mediumship music played by great musicians from the Brazilian Popular Music.

O Consolador: Is it hard to get the rights and launch videos that have been produced in other countries? How does that work?

We need to get hold of the ones that contain a Spiritist message on them. The majority of the movies launched are only looking for the supernatural phenomena. From every 1000 movies produced, one could be considered Spiritualist. The only spiritist movie launched that was produced by non-spiritists is called YESTERDAY’S CHILDREN. We need to buy the rights to be able to disseminate the movie in Brazil for a period of 5 to 14 years.

O Consolador: How has the editing and distributing process of the national productions being happening?

We have been doing this job with a lot of research, dedication and love to the Doctrine.

O Consolador: What are the most popular titles?

Yesterday's Children, Pinga Fogo com Chico Xavier, Spiritism – From Kardec to Recent Days, Chico Xavier – From Pedro Leopoldo e Uberaba e Eurípedes Barsanulfo.

O Consolador: What is Versátil’s site?

http://www.dvdversatil.com.br/

O Consolador: As we are celebrating 100 years of Chico Xavier in 2010, can you please tell us titles that are related to his work?

1. Pinga Fogo com Chico Xavier; 2. Chico Xavier - De Pedro Leopoldo e Uberaba; 3. Joelma 23o Andar; 4. Saulo Gomes Entrevista Chico Xavier em 1968.

O Consolador: Would you have any mediumship experiences related to the production /distribution of titles in the spiritist movement to share with us?

No, we don’t have any of this happening.

O Consolador: Is there any remarkable experience you would like to share with the readers?

Yes, there is. It’s so grateful to see that we, Spiritists, now can watch movie and documentaries related to names we love and respect.

O Consolador: Is there anything else you would like to add?

Yes, there is. 90% of our DVDs are sold through non-spiritists bookshops and sites

O Consolador: Can you please give us your final words?

Thank you, Allan Kardec. Thank you, Chico Xavier.
