Disaster in Haiti, another one shocking the world

Another disaster, this time of huge proportions, shocked the planet last 12th, when a earthquake in Haiti caused a massive destruction and thousands of deaths, including the one that abbreviated the corporeal life of Zilda Arns, as highlighted in this week’s editorial, entitled Zilda Arns, a life dedicated to others.

One of the highlights in the present edition is the interesting interview that a Spiritism admirer, the youngster Maria da Conceição Rocha Cavalcante, rooted in João Pessoa, capital of the state of Paraíba, conceded to our collaborator and editor Orson Peter Carrara. In the interview, she talks about her work of diagramming for various spiristist publications and says how the Spiritist Doctrine is seen by society in general nowadays.

It’s also a highlight in this edition the special report where the confrere Jorge Hessen, from Brasília-DF, analyses the climate change theme and its consequences, which is an up-to-date and very important subject, given so many natural disasters that have affected different regions across the planet, especially in the last years.

Several Esperanto organizations have been rewarded in the end of 2009 by the Mansão do Caminho (Mansion of the Path), from Salvador (state of Bahia), and by the City Council of Niterói, as presented in the special report published in this issue, which is also a highlight this week.

On January 24th 1887, 123 years ago, the writer Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of the detective Sherlock Holmes, the most famous character of police tales, started spiritist sessions with the medium Ball. Conan Doyle, who later became a great divulgator of Spiritism by offering speeches, is the author of the book History of the Spiritualism, translated under the title História do Espiritismo in Brazil.
