Carlos Antonio de Barros Silva:

“Abrade is on good hands”

Carlos is the Assistant of Social Communication for ABRADE – Brazilian Association of Publishers of Spiritism. Here he
talks about his experience of using technological
resources to disclose Spiritism

Carlos Antonio de Barros Silva (picture) is our week’s interviewee. He is from Campina Grande and now lives in João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil. He has been working as a Journalist since 1989. He started as a trainee for the newspaper Diário de Pernambuco. He now works with electronically editorials at his home office.

He coordinated for 18 years a Spiritist Book Club in João Pessoa. He is now involved with Agência de Notícias Espíritas da Paraíba (ANESPB), which is disclosing news  on  Spiritism   throughout   Paraíba,

Brazil. In the following interview, he talks about this experience.

O Consolador: When did the Spiritist Book Club started in João Pessoa?

It was founded in August 1991 and was a pioneer project in Paraíba. It once had 500 associates, who were based in Paraíba and even in other States from Brazil. We then created the role of agent at the Spiritist centres to work as a mediator for new associates and to deliver the material. The profit was used to help poor pregnant women, to buy material for the Club and to buy the books monthly. We were always able to get great discounts. This happened until February 2009, and it was a great experience in all its aspects.

O Consolador: When was the Agência de Notícias Espíritas da Paraíba (ANESPB) created?

ANESPB started to operate in August 1998. We had an extensive range of material produced (articles, news, interviews and documentaries) which was available for newspapers and magazines that would like to get access to it. We worked with a professional photographer and ran around a lot to get all these material produced (lol).

O Consolador: Who benefited with the production organised by ANESPB?

We worked for a different range of newspapers: A Voz do Espírito (SP), Jornal Espírita (SP), Correio Fraterno (SP), Tribuna Espírita (PB), Jornal Espírita de Natal (RN) e Nova Luz (SC); magazines Fraternidade (Portugal), Internacional de Espiritismo (SP) and Harmonia (SC). W are the regional Editors for the newspaper Harmonia at Paraíba for the last five years.

O Consolador: Can you please tell us more about the electronic magazine PENSADOR?

PENSADOR was launched in November 2004. It had eight printed pages and only 200 samples were printed. It was distributed independently to readers who signed up for it. Since we didn’t have the resources to maintain it, we decided to launch it electronically. It now has 10 colourful pages; it’s free of charge and available as a PDF file. It is linked to the blog of ANESPB. We are now publishing it monthly.

O Consolador: How many users access the blog of ANESPB? How is it maintained?

The blog was created to disclose the Brazilian Spiritist Movement. It is also a tool to disclose the magazine PENSADOR. In October 2008 we started to format and insert posts on it. We want to improve it with interesting links in order to increase awareness of this site. We now have 20 thousand access/visits, and we have been around for less than a year! We are the ones who update the blog on a daily basis. We do have a team of correspondents in Paraíba and in other capitals around the country. The web address is:  www.anespb.net/ or http://anespbmovimento.blogspot.com/.

O Consolador: What does ABRADE – Brazilian Association of Publishers of Spiritism – do?

ABRADE has changed a lot over the last few years and became much more flexible. We now have a series of projects we are working on, which will be disclosed at the right time.

O Consolador: What do you have to say about the magazine HARMONIA?

This is a publication from ADE/SC (Association of Disclosers of Spiritism from Santa Catarina), that is distributed across Brazil and in some countries in Europe. Marcelo Henrique Pereira is the founder and Chief-Editor. Their team is highly intellectual, and its level of quality is excellent. It is of great value for the national spiritist movement.

O Consolador: What are your final words?

We would like to thank the electronic magazine O Consolador, especially Astolfo O. de Oliveira Filho, for the honourable opportunity to be in this interview. We are thankful for our friends who never stopped supporting the projects we have of disclosing Spiritism. We would like to especially thank our wife Carmem. Our best wishes to you all!
