140 years ago, the newspaper Eco d’Além Túmulo
appeared in Bahia

The crowds cried for the early end of Michael Jackson’s existence. He was remarkable as a singer, a composer and a dancer, to the point of making many specialists affirm after his disincarnation that will be very difficult to appear someone to supplant him in talent and success in our planet. The fact is the central theme of this week’s editorial, entitled The death and the idol.

One of the headlines in this edition is the interview conceded to our magazine by the confrere Paulo Fernando de Oliveira, who assumed the presidency of the Spiritist Center Nosso Lar, from Londrina, last Wednesday. During the interview, the president of the oldest Spiritist house in the region talks about his introduction to Spiritism and his projects as the institution’s lead.

Another headline this week is the special article by Leonardo Marmo Moreira, who focuses on the 20 biggest mistakes of Christianism regarding the Gospels. In the article, the author reminds that Jesus’ message, after his return to the Spiritual world, has been systematically and continuously disfigured, like many specialists have already shown along the history.

Last Sunday, the II German Spiritist Conference has finished, having the phrase “We are immortal beings” as central theme, as Claudia Werdine shows in a special report which constitutes another headline in the present edition.

This week, it has been 140 years since the first Spiritist newspaper, the Eco d' Além-Túmulo, was published in Brazil. It was edited in Salvador, Province of Bahia at that epoch, and its publication started the divulgation of the Spiritist Doctrine in Portuguese in the country. Until then, the texts used to be in French.

Having a bimestrial periodicity, the newspaper was published for two years and reached other countries, circulating in capitals such as London, Paris, New York and Madrid. Its editor and publisher was Luís Olímpio Teles de Menezes, recognized by his audacity, given that the state official religion was Catholicism, as established by the Constitution of 1824.
