Rushed judgment

In a green field, there was a lake of clear water, full of fish where some herons used to feed.

One day, two herons were there fishing, as they used to do. They entered with their long legs in the water's edge and stood there in silence, waiting for some absent-minded fish to pass, to be caught in a swift swipe.

It was then that another heron appeared flying in the sky, which soon landed next to the other two. She was not known. It was the first time she had visited that lake.

- Hello good afternoon! – she greeted. – Can I fish here with you? I´ve got excited on the flight, on this beautiful day that is doing today. I ended up here, far from where I live. Now I'm hungry. I need to feed before I go back.

The two friends, unsympathetically, replied:

- You should have paid more attention!

- Go fishing over there, otherwise you'll still get in our way.

- I know you must be finding my presence odd - argued the stranger - I actually wanted to help you fish, in appreciations for me eating here today.

- Help? Oh no no, each one fishes their own - replied one of the two buddies herons.

- Okay, I understand, sorry to bother you - said the visitor, resigned, who walked away slowly, walking along the edge of the lake.

The two herons were watching her and soon began to comment:

– Look how she does it. Don't stand still! How are you going to fish like this?

– I think she didn't want to help, she wanted to be helped, that's it! She's probably a slacker who expected us to fish for her! That is what we need!

- That's right! She must not know how to fish! I'm sure she was bothering the herons from her pond and that's why she got kicked out. But if she thinks she's going to take a break here, she's so wrong!

The comments continued:

- My God! Look how weird she is. Doesn't she know it's not okay to get close to human beings? She is going to the side of that family that is throwing bread to the fish.

– Oh, I know! Since she doesn't know how to fish, she will try to eat the bread. All that's left is she chokes up!

- That's right! You are very smart, pal. Look at the piece of bread she just took. And she'll still have to think it's good, better than nothing!

The two were amused by their judgment of the new heron and laughed a lot.

While they spoke, the other acted. She approached, carefully, the children who were throwing bread in the water, took the largest piece and walked away, carrying it in her beak. But instead of eating it, she went to a safe, clean, shallow place and dropped it into the water. In a short time, a big fish, seeing that appetizing snack, approached and the heron, with great agility and speed, managed to catch her first fish.

It didn't take long for another fish to want the delicious piece too, but the heron, finding the fish too small, lifted the bread, chasing away the sweet tooth. She then put it back in the water and soon caught another big fish. It didn't take long, she ate another one and just didn't eat more because she would have to fly a lot and didn't want to get heavy.

So, in a few minutes, she had her meal and left.

The two herons, who watched everything, were speechless. They just looked at each other, wide-eyed, still amazed at the cunning of that heron and the lesson they had received.

They had learned a new, more efficient way to fish. But the most important lesson they learned is that we must never make hasty judgments.
