The lesson of nature

Beto was on vacation at the house of his cousin Luisinho, who lived in the countryside. He liked to visit Luisinho whenever he could, because with him he had fun and learned new things, like riding a horse, milking cows, climbing trees, taking care of animals and other things.

One afternoon, the boys were riding horses, when Luisinho said, worried:

- Let's go back, Beto. It will rain heavy!

Beto was not used to perceiving the signs of nature. Only after the cousin spoke did he notice that it had started to blow a cold wind. In the sky, dark clouds were rapidly approaching and in the distance some lightning were already visible. The birds and other animals seemed agitated and loud.

The two boys took the way back home and made the horses run. As soon as they arrived, Luisinho ran to help his parents take the animals to the stable. Then they all went into the house and closed the windows.

It was just in time, because as soon as they entered, the rain fell. The sky was illuminated by many lightings, followed by thunders that came to frighten. The wind, so strong, turned everything around and made the plants lie down.

Luisinho's mother cooked some candies and heated the milk for the boys to have a snack. When the rain was over, they went for a walk.

Not far from the house, a tree had fallen, leaving its roots out of the ground.

- What a shame! - said Beto, climbing the trunk of the tree, which was now lying on the ground. - It's amazing how the wind managed to uproot a big tree like that, isn't it?

- Actually, this tree was already old, Beto. Its torso was already rotten, it wasn't going to last much longer. The rain just completed the job. But look at these seedlings here, see? - Said Luisinho, pointing with his finger - They are seedlings of this same tree. Now they will sunbathe and grow faster. They will replace the old tree.

Beto marveled at Luisinho's explanation. Instead of seeing only a fallen tree, he also saw the renewal that it would take place.

Further, when they reached the river's edge, Beto noticed:

- Wow! Look how the color of the water has changed! It's brown. The water is full of clay.

- Yes, but it will stay like this for a few days, soon the water will be clean again. This mud that came into the river brought nutrients to the aquatic plants, which protect and feed the fish - explained Luisinho.

The boys continued their walk and reached the orchard.

- Wow! Look, Luisinho, how many fallen fruits. The strong wind took them all away. What a waste!

- Well, actually, the fruits that fell were already at least a little ripe. It is a waste for us, but lowland pacas, agoutis and other animals that do not climb trees will enjoy this fruit feast on the ground.

The sky was clear again and the late afternoon sun shone through the clouds. Luisinho saw a rainbow and showed it to his cousin.

- How beautiful! - Said Beto, admired.

- I learned that the rainbow is formed by the passage of sunlight in the drops of clouds. That's why it appears normally after the rain.

Back home, they saw Luisinho's father on the roof, fixing and changing some tiles that had moved with the wind. The boys took the hammer and large nails and were willing to help.

When night came, the family retired. Beto, in his bed, thought of the apprenticeship that day of heavy rain had given him.

He was used to seeing only destruction and dirt after a storm. But now he understood that, in many situations, change is necessary, so that new and good opportunities can arise.
