The Frog and the Jaguar

It was getting dark and the frog Tenório, as he used to do on several nights, took his violin, sat on the grass by the lake and started singing. Tenório was neither a big frog nor a beautiful one. But everyone liked him. Always smiling, he had a contagious joy. Optimistic, good-tempered and friendly, Tenório was able to make any conversation better, raising the spirits of those who talked to him.

Soon, other frogs were arriving. Some sang along with Tenório and others approached just to listen to. The most animated songs made the frogs jump, dance and have a lot of fun.

Because of Tenório, the frogs of the lake became more united and happier. They got together when he played and had a good time together, gradually becoming friends.

Frogs' joy even attracted other animals - such as ducks, turtles and rabbits.

The fame of the singers reached the ears of the jaguar, the most feared animal in the neighborhood. She was very powerful and angry. And very unhappy too, because wherever she arrived everyone ran from her or hid. She was respected, but she had no friends.

The jaguar decided to investigate the frog parties and find out why everyone was so happy at them. She hid in a bush and watched the songs and lively dances. She noticed the small frog Tenório, who happily played his violin encouraging others to sing with him.

Suddenly, the jaguar jumped up and appeared in the crowd. Without saying anything, she grabbed Tenório and ran, leaving behind the frightened animals.

The desperation was over-all. Especially Tenório’s, who was green, became white with fear.

The jaguar, after a few minutes, stopped and released the frog, which said, almost without a voice:

- For God's sake, Mrs. Jaguar, don't eat me!

- No need drama! I wouldn't eat you even if I was hungry. Don't be offended, but you are very bitter! Replied the jaguar, wiping her mouth with her paw.

- I don't take offense, no. On the contrary, I'm happy to hear that! - Said the frog, relieved - But then why did you bring me here?

- I am strong, beautiful, big and respected. Despite that, I think you're a lot happier than me. You have nothing special and yet you are always happy. Frog, I want your happiness, your joy of living. And you will teach me how to do it. Now! - Snarled the jaguar, looking at him angrily.

Tenório swallowed hard. He thought a little and said:

- Mrs. Jaguar, I don't know why I'm like this! But I suspect it is because I am grateful for what I have. I am not an animal with many attributes, but that was God's will for me. Every day I try to stay in tune with the laws of our Creator. I do my best to cultivate good and joy. With my violin, which I don't even play that well, I spend happy moments. That's it! I lead a good life, not wanting to be more than anyone. I think that joy is a consequence of it all.

- That’s it? You talking like that sounds easy. Most of the animals I know are always concerned with their reputation, their image... and strive to look happier than they really are.

- I think it's just people trying to do God's will, fulfilling what He has programmed for us. And thank Him for everything! - Said the frog.

- Fine! - Said the jaguar - I'll try to do that, frog. You can leave if you want. Sorry, but I'm not taking you back, okay? You're really bitter, you know?

- Can I go? Thank you! - Said the frog, relieved – No problem, I´ll go back by myself.

And saying goodbye, he said:

- I'm bitter, right? Did you know that your jaguar's breath is also not good? - Tenório smiled so that the jaguar realized he was playing - Still, I enjoyed talking to you. Bye, all the best!

The jaguar also smiled with the frog's friendly manner.

Tenório returned to the lake and was received with great joy. That night they had the biggest party to celebrate.

The jaguar tried to follow the new friend's recommendation. She began to observe more life and all the good things it had. She became calmer and, from time to time, she even appeared at Tenório's parties, who welcomed her happily.

Tenório continued to play his violin. With his humble, spontaneous way, he showed everyone that joy, this so desired virtue, is found in very simple things.
